stuck in 5th gear, not in reverse

I did some research. I've watched the video "transmission disaster" but my problems is a different. I just got my car back from paint shop all happy driving to work everything is fine. On the way back i was shifting hard and when it came to the time to shift into 5th gear, it got stuck some where in the middle like not all the way in the 5th like and inch closer to the neutral position but still 5th gear was engaged some how. So i tried to remove it no success. I had to drive it for a 4-5 more miles to my house in 5th gear.. and now i dont even know what to do after i read all this about reverse problem its not that right? I need my car back ASAP. :vash:

anybody has any clue about it ? Thanks in advance

take it apart and fix the stuck shift fork that might even be bent too

next time don't shift like a retard.

So you are very positive with your solution ? I just want to make sure i come to the right conclusion so i do the right thing. Don't really want to take it to the shop to take the tranny apart, but if this is the only way to fix then I'll have too

Something in the shift linkage is popped out and may or may not be able to be popped back in again. If you are paying a shop to disassemble the trans, stop right there and buy another one. I've killed at least one 5-speed this way (locked in 4th or 5th, stick in neutral), and killed another box locking it into 2nd the same way. It's not uncommon on boxes with a little abuse in their history. I just replace the entire gearbox and move on with life.

by the way i just tried to pop the detent back i couldnt even stick the screw driver all the way. it feels like the detent passes the hole . seems like i will have to end up buying a new tranny.

It's just not worth messing with when you can get an NB 5-speed for $250. You'll pay more than that in labor just opening your current box to find out what you need to buy to replace it.

You'll like your new transmission 😉. Just shift it smooth, make sure you put mt90 in the trans.

You need to put your location in your profile so it shows up under your name. Maybe there is someone local to you that has some spare ones. For instance I have at least 2 spares ones that I would let go for a reasonable price.

sixshooter 03-09-2016 12:14 PM

I have one.

A spare transmission, not a tiny wang, just for clarity.

brainzata 03-09-2016 12:50 PM

He's got a transmission, hence my post saying he'll like his new one lol. He snagged up a nb tranny that's only been fondled 51000 times(miles).

Bringing this back from the dead.

On NA's it seems like removing the detent washers solves the problem pretty easily. Is that not the case for an NB? My '01 kept getting stuck in 5th at Grattan this weekend. I'll pull apart the shifter tomorrow, but I need to keep expenses to a minimum and get to runoffs next month.
