550/350 on NB Bilstein Sports is creamy.

I did a trans swap on jackstands without power tools mere weeks ago, i just didn't expect anyone to jerk me off over it.

But the price difference between them and a regular set are slim to none..

concealer404 08-10-2018 09:09 AM

I don't know what that means. What is "a regular set?"

a bolt on, pre Assembled, with warranty, set of off the shelf coilovers.

All of which are inferior in this price point. We don't do Bilsteins because they're cheap... we do it because they're the best ~$1000 and under option. Period. I have more like $1500 in my Bilstein setup. I do not regret it.

This is an important statement. You need to think about this.

All this mess could be avoided for just another 700 bucks and then you would have the VERY BEST.

so then here we are
550/350 on NB B8’s
top hats I can use NB front and Good-win rears? They’re only $75 and look identical to fortune auto’s.

in the wise words of a local who runs a shitty setup by the previous owner: “I will not have another $15,000 $2000 car.”

ryansmoneypit 08-10-2018 09:33 AM

Using shitty parts doesn't make you wise, quite the opposite. I just sold a pile of old miata related parts, all hi quality stuff. I might have lost 30% total, all said and done. Junk parts dont bring that return.

Used Xidas regularly bring 1300-1500. a better loss than owning Dish Network stock

If your going to loose money, at least do it responsibly .

You CAN use stock fronts.... i don't really recommend it. Goodwins may not fit the front.

I'd look at 450/300 for a street car that chicks will want to ride in with the Bilsteins. I have had them. I currently have 550/350 because I run Hoosier slicks on the track. If I didn't run slicks on a track I would have 450/300. THAT'S CREAMY on the street with those shocks.

concealer404 08-10-2018 09:45 AM

My wife likes her 700/400 Bilsteins because she's a real man.

Oh. Oh wait. Hrm.

I have Summit QA1 450f/300R and my fiance didn't even notice after I installed them..

They're a bargain once you realize what you're getting for your money. Lookup MCS, Penske, and the like. Fortune is crap quality. Slammed or not, Koni sports ride like crap. Goes on and on. You can bring the price down on your billie build out by using cheaper springs fwiw. Just go QA1 if you're on a budget.

ThePanduuh 08-10-2018 10:17 AM

450/300 looks like a better option for me. I don’t need track stiffness, but I want it a little stiffer than very old stock. And comfortable enough to soak up some PA bumps.

Goodwin only makes rear top hats. So Maruha fronts? Could do Maruha all around but they are kinda shallow looking at the pictures. Still undecided on bump stops because I have no clue how these measurements take into account on a real assembly.

concealer404 08-10-2018 10:19 AM

The goodwins fit the front of an NA, but maybe not NB. The Maruhas are long enough.

Buy bump stops, cut to fit. The size they come in will be way too long, so you cut them.

so stock these things have some weird 2 bushing setup. The bushing below the top hat then one above that gets squashed. Do we retain that setup? The ones I saw didn’t have that setup the same as stock, they used a cut up bump stop lol. And I guess any spring insulator would work, so long as it’s for a 2.5” spring. Just a piece of poly at the end of the day.

concealer404 08-10-2018 10:51 AM

Yes you need upper and lower hat bushings.

y8s 08-10-2018 10:59 AM

you helped someone, you magnificent boneheads.

requesting a wiki for the bilstein coilover thread so the relevant data is extracted into one useful place instead of spread over 78 (and counting) pages, thus requiring 10 page threads every time someone wants to know what the greatest cheap suspension is. who makes wikis around here?

concealer404 08-10-2018 11:01 AM

It's all relevant data. That's the issue here. In order to be successful with one of those setups, you have to be able to learn enough to make an informed decision. He's already chosen a different spring rate than was actually recommended by those who have done the most of these setups, because he spent the time to read and learn for himself. A wiki that's more than "You need 4 shocks, 4 sleeves/perches, 4 bump stops, 4 springs, 4 top hats, and maybe some spring isolators" would be a disservice.

Goodwin will not fit front, rear only. For front Garagestar, TwoSixMotorsport, ISC. But if you are doing that - may as well get all the same.

Here is my old set as an exaple
