Tokico Setup Any Good?
So, I'm going to check out a '91 Miata here in a bit. The owner says it's got Tokico springs and struts. From the pics, it doesn't look lowered much. Anyone know about this setup?

Not really but it will get you down the road. It's a junk, mass produced, twin tube that will ride like shit on highspeed velocities and it's too soft on low-speed compression. Tell us how the struts look.

If it's the "HP" combo (blue shocks, red springs), it's not good.

That's kinda what I was assuming. I'll take a look when I check the car out. If I get the car, they'll be eventually swapped out. What would you guys suggest to be a reasonably priced (<$500), good setup? The car will never see a track, but I would like to flog it around some twisties. Oh, and if it matters, good ride quality isn't a big concern.

MSM bilsteins with MSM springs are great on the track. I think you can run that set-up with the NB uppers (gutted) and ride height will be good, but that's unconfirmed. You can also buy the MSM/GC set-up and get softer springs and be very happy. I think the spring is too stiff for a street car at 450/375. |
Alright, I ended up buying the Miata today. It's got the Tokico blues, but I don't think the springs are Tokico. They're black and the car looks barely lowered, if at all. It does ride fairly stiff though, so IDK. Also, it looks to have bigger swaybars too. I'm gonna do some research on that MSM setup.

Personally, I went with what I thought was the best bang for the buck, the FM Stage 2 NB conversion package. New springs, shocks with lifetime warranty and sway bars for $1000. Totally transformed the car. I'm playing with the settings on the rear sway bar for autocrossing, but for just fun road driving it would be great for you. There's lots of opinions out there and each person might choose a different setup based on their preferences. Before you spend $500 or $1000+ on any suspension, I would really encourage you to get a ride in other miatas with various setups. It helped me quite a bit. |
