Torsen rebuild questions?
So I just pulled my diff last night because I assumed it was an open and was going to weld it. To my surprise and excitement it turnEd out to be a torsen.
is there a way to test if it is still strong or if it is weak? Would it be wise to just go ahead and rebuild it since I have it out (if it's stock it would have close to 180k on it)? Anyone have any leads on the parts I would need? |
It's probably fine as it is. I've heard of people replacing thrust washers, but they are making or sourcing these themselves. Torsen don't supply parts, and don't consider these rebuilable. Put it back in and test it out, but perhaps a little harder?

Will do. Thank you for the info. I'm gonna clean it out and make sure there's no debris inside first since idk the last time it was serviced. Got some Castrol syntrax limited slip 75w 90 to fill it back up with

No need for limited slip diff oil. It doesn't have any clutches.

The name isn't fitting. You DO sound like an average squid!
Didn't spend 5 minutes to check through the fill plug, to see what diff you have. Then is about to fill it with a clutch type fluid. You haz much learning to do. We all make silly mistakes. |
There's a youtube video that illustrates how a TorSen works. It is worth a watch.
If you are a buttsexer and are planning on buttsexing the car then you may want to change to a welded open diff and save the more valuable TorSen to sell to someone who is into road racing or autocross. Miatas are a terrible platform for buttsexing because of their low polar moment of inertia. They are poorly suited for it. A longer wheelbase platform like the 240sx, rx7, 350z, and some of the American cars are much easier to set and hold a buttsex angle, but it's what makes Miatas better for road racing. |
I think the crown vic would make a wonderful buttsex car. I would trade for a miata when the winter is over. Its already got buttsex cred with the indestructible "paint".

Does lsd oil provide better angle during buttsexing?
|
Yes, if applied liberally.
