NB Is the number plate on the transmission the VIN of the car it was installed in?

Hi guys. I hope this is the right forum.

I recently purchased a six speed transmission.

It was supposedly a 99 Special Edition with 55k miles on it.

When I got it home, upon close inspection, it seemed to me that a transmission with only 55k should not have a rubber shifter boot [the little one underneath the big one] that was worn with tears in it.

So. It got me thinking. Is there really only 55k on it?

I then discovered what appeared to be a vin label on the body of the transmission. Googled it. It turned up as a wrecked 2000 Miata Special Edition in a parts yard with 113,950 miles on it!

So. Before I say anthing to the seller I need to confirm something from some of you guys with experience.

Is the Number Plate on the transmission, that looks just like a VIN number plate indicate the VIN number of the car into which the transmission was initially installed.

They scammed you for 60k miles but if it wasn't beat on the track, it will be fine anyway. If it were me, I would tell the seller just to make the point and hopefully make him a bit uncomfortable in the process. Maybe he'll send you a few bucks for the 'misunderstanding'.

Unless someone did something catastrophic that MSM transmission should have been fine with such low mileage. I'd bring it up with the seller, too.

My Torsen was from a junkyard car. Probably blew a seal and the little old lady that owned it just kept on trucking.

The shifter rubbers do not last long, 50k mile failure is highly likely.

Ripped shift boots on a 55k tranny is not uncommon. A VIN plate with 110k on a 55k tranny is cause for more concern.
