Transmission noise

Ever since i replaced my old clutch and flywheel ive had this whine come from the transmission. I didnt know if this is normal as i remember reading about clutch chatter. It doesnt whine in gear (obviously) but its most noticible while engine is in vaccume (like going down a hill in gear) or going from low to mid rpms.

Any ideas?

Sound change with clutch in vs clutch out?

SKMetalworks 08-12-2009 08:45 PM

Sound goes away when the clutch is in. Only does it when the car is in gear

wayne_curr 08-12-2009 08:49 PM

Sounds like its definitely transmission related, not clutch if it only happens in gear. Put oil back in it? l0l

FWIW my tranny whines like a supercharger in 5th on the freeway.

ya just about 2qts of MTL

miatamike203 08-12-2009 08:53 PM

mine dose

SKMetalworks 08-12-2009 08:55 PM

Prior to the clutch installation it did not make any noise except shifting into another gear.

wayne_curr 08-12-2009 08:58 PM

didja rip up the upper/lower rubber shift boots now letting in more noise?

hustler 08-12-2009 09:01 PM

it happens. Amsoil mtg or whatever is the shiz.

Lightweight flywheels do that, just gonna have to live with it. Its not really hurting anything besides your ears.

+1 gazillion.

Mine sounds like the world is ending. It is gear dependent 5th nothing, 4th and 3rd LOUD until under 2500 rpm then nothing.

Just have to live with it.

O well. My cars still fast as fuck.:fawk:

If the shit is that bad you prob have something ratteling around that shouldnt be.

To the OP i suggest its your throw out bearing wich when unlaoded and un lubed can make a good bit of racket.

SKMetalworks 08-13-2009 12:40 AM

Lubed it up with come copper anti-sieze on all the reccomended spots per the miata enthusiast manual.

NA6C-Guy 08-13-2009 10:03 PM

It's just gear noise that is amplified with reduction in rotating mass. See, even FM knows

"The heavier unit will be a little quieter on overrun (lightweight flywheels can cause the transmission to make noise on closed-throttle deceleration) and a bit easier to drive."

Just deal with it. I actually kind of like the rally car sounds that sometimes nearly overpower my radio. I guess probably a brand new car might not do it, but anything with any amount of miles on it will have enough play to be noticed.

Thanks for putting the little voice in the back of my head saying, "you need to post on the forums cause i think you fucked something up" to rest. :bowrofl:
