What grease to use with poly bushings?
What do you guys use that comes in a tube to use with a grease gun/ zerk fittings?
I really dont want to pull all the arms out of my daily to regrease the bushings... |
The last time I had to deal with this, I couldn't find anything in a tube that held up long enough, or I worried about compatibility with the polly. What I ended up with was a cheap ass grease gun where I could manually load the cylinder with grease, and bought a bunch of and used that. It's sticky and messy as hell but it worked great. This was a while back on my 65 Mustang that was all polly bushings. I can't find the gun online right now but they are out there... I think I got it at Harbor Freight. I've also read that marine grade grease will hold up pretty well, but I never tried it. Hope that helps!

I just got done installing some of my poly bushings. That grease is sticky. No real input on the thread... but deal god my hands were so sticky.

Use the sticky stuff designed for poly bushings or you'll have to lube more frequently. People who use petroleum or lithium should not be taken seriously.
|
I bought 3 tubes of Green Grease. Im fairly certain its the same stuff that polybushings.com sells. Its more than nasty enough.

Which one of you assholes made this video? It's done in true MT.net fashion:

Whats the reasoning behind not using petrolium? Does it degrade the bushing? I've heard this before but never knew why... And too lazy to search for the answer. Thanks!

Emilio shot some picks of installing zerks when he did some bushings - he added "If you run out of the Hyperlube the bushings come with, I recommend Superlube, Ace Hardware carries it too."

What are the chances that I can install Zerks with control arms on the car? I would have done this from the start but I installed on a holiday. |
What's wrong with lithium? I use wally world, heavy duty marine grease for just about everything. It's lithium based, and very icky. and it doesn't wash out.

I especially like this one where he burns out the old bushings with the control arm bolted to the car, lol:
"If you think this fire damages the control arms, you are a ******." |

I figured "lithium marine grease" fell under the subheading of "people who use lithium." I suppose you were specifically referring to the white stuff??

Lol that video looks like so much work compared to the threaded rod method.

What are the chances that I can install Zerks with control arms on the car? I would have done this from the start but I installed on a holiday. I Green Greased ~half the bushings on my car last night (there were zerks on 16 of 22 bushings, but 4 were inaccessible (front outboard RLCAs and rearward FLCAs), and the RUCAs didn't have zerks). This stuff is impervious to chlorinated brake cleaner, Simple Green, Awesome, and Show Car brand Dyno Clean (local detail company's super bad spray cleaner). It took 3 washes with Dawn and Permatex Ultra Cherry to stop leaving finger prints on everything I touched, and I finally can't feel it on my skin ~3 hand washes and a shower later. It's not going anywhere. Use gloves when you apply this stuff (duh). As long as it doesn't eat or soften the bushings, Green Grease is the answer. |
Honestly installing my bushings with that grease was the most miserable thing ever. It's all over my tools, and took so long to get off my hands :***(
