Who here has a transmission brace? Help needed

I don't know if this happens to you guys or not but my tranny is hard to shift from 1st to 2nd from a dig at full wot. I think the tranny has too much movement and I'm pretty sure it's cause I'm still on stock motor mounts. I really don't feel like doing MM untill winter so could or has anyone made a tranny brace? I was thinking of making one

tyson87 10-26-2009 09:43 AM

TravisR of BE is making us one i think.

Wouldn't this be cake to fabricate? A piece of metal going side to side with two tabs. 2 bolts on the tranny and one bolt on each side of the frame?

You need to address why your transmission is so hard to shift. This isn't a common problem, an additional part might fix the symptom but won't deal with the root cause.

do ur MM, it will take u all of 3 hours.

But what could it be? I can feel the tranny moving from the torque, it's fine after I'm in 3rd

Maybe you have a fubar motor mount. Alignment of the PPF? Clutch isn't releasing properly? You can't drive?

I don't know, but 99.9% of the Miatas out there don't have a brace connecting the trans to the car.

tyson87 10-26-2009 11:10 AM

who said anything about telling her.

I can drive, clutch is fine, I don't know what ppf is, and I think it might be a MM.
And people don't have tranny mounts? I could have sworn I've seen them before.

ppf= Power Plant Frame. The thing that replaces a traditional trans mount on these cars.

The only time anybody uses a trans mount on these cars is when they swap in a transmission or rear end that doesn't have provisions for the PPF.

And I agree that adding one is an ass backward solution to a non existant problem. Do Mazda Comp motor mounts and maybe diff mounts. They're under $150 for the whole car, and will make life better. Or at least will make the shift action more positive, reduce wheel hop and add a little more buzz at idle.

miataspeed2005 10-26-2009 11:44 AM

Which ones do you guys suggest? Mazda comp ones or Mazdaspeed ones?

jayc72 10-26-2009 11:45 AM

Same thing.

I run a brace under the tranny. Connects between tabs on lower control arms with two bolts and is bolted to the transmission through rubber bushings. Shifter seems to move less from side to side when on power.

cueball1 10-26-2009 01:43 PM

Corksport has the pair of Mazdaspeed mounts for $69. The cheapest price i've found. Those and poly diff mounts do a huge amount to clear up excess movement.

If no one has the MMS mounts in stock (no one does last i checked), you can get the megan mounts on ebay. Cost a little more but are nearly the same thing. I am running them in my car now and I like them.

I understand...I'm scared shitless of my wife too. Lack of pussy is like my kryptonite...and that bitch knows how to hit me where it hurts.

Jk...we're on a budget too...so do what I did and make your own:

nearly 4K miles and still no problems at all. This fixed my shifting...and still works great.

I think I rather have her kill me then making my own and then having one break and end up using double $, I'm sure your DIY ones work good but I'm just affraid of risking it
