Willwood pad rattle
 

I have been dealing with a random rattle noise from the front end when going over rough roads at <20mph. I'm sure the car is just to loud to hear above that speed. I have looked at every bracket, fiting and component in the engine compartment and on the suspension and have not been able to find anything for months.

I did find that even the slightest application of pressure on the brake pedal would silence the rattle. So while I had the wheels off this weekend I wiggled all the brake components. First I thought it might be a loose Willwood caliper or caliper bracket, but all was tight and torqued. Turns out the pads are wiggling a little. Moving the pads around by hand made the same noise I hear while driving. It appears that the pads are moving up and down a little on the spring retainers. I tought these spring retainers were supposed to prevent this kind of noise from occuring.

Any one else have these issues with Willwood Dynalite calipers? Any fixes.

I don't know if it matters but I am running HP+pads, but I am pretty sure I had the same rattle with the -10 Willwood crappy pads before.

This sounds 100% identical to what my sport brakes were doing. I added a fuck ton of CRC brake quiet and it seems to have gone away. Mine I believe is due to not running the side shims on the caliper.

Can you use a slightly larger cotter pin or maybe sleeve it in something that damps the noise a little?

All Dynalite pads rattle, it's how they're designed.

The fix is to ignore it or use a caliper that's designed to keep the pads from rattling, like the Dynapro or Powerlite

Looking at the design that is kinda what I expected. Not much you can do about it.

I did think about using the spring clip that I have or a different cotter pin, but I doubt it would make a difference.

Has any one tried to add a shim under the spring clips to reduce the pad play? Or some way to stiffen the spring clips? You would have to leave enough room for the pad to expand when it gets hot.

Right now I am just living with it. It sucks when my mostly nicely put together car sounds like a rattle can going down the road!
