Wilwood Spec37 Rotor Life

Gents,

Attached are a couple of pics of one of my Wilwood 11.75" brake rotors. Curved vanes, #160-12284. The other disc of the pair looks pretty much the same. They have 25 track days on them, plus I still drive her two and from events. Roughly 8,000 total miles.

.
The bottom pic is a closeup with the lens at 2X. I cannot catch my fingernail in any of the cracks. That picture makes the disc look worse than it does to the eye out in the sun. They're not warped.

Do they need to be replaced? If so, could they still be used as spares or should I trash them? I have two sets of hats and am in the process of building up another set of mounted rotors anyway. I'm astounded how long these last compared to the Centric Premium Sport Brake blanks. The TSE BBK will eventually pay for itself.

Thanks,

Me? I would toss them, or keep them as an emergency space. Do you have brake ducts for these guys?

I do have ducting. Early TSE 2" kit.

I added the diverter after reading a thread about the inside disc having different wear characteristics than the outside disc--the inside disc was getting too much cooling. The diverter helps make the cooling air go though the center of the disc. The inner and outer discs seem to have the same amount of heat stress cracking now. I know the ducting works because I no longer get down to check tire pressures after a track session and think "Holy fuck those brakes are hot"...

Mine looked pretty similar after around 6 days (1200 track miles?), but were near minimum thickness so changed them anyway. This is with 2.5" ducting and ~230-260whp depending on how I was feeling.... So your life seems pretty good. I assume a light duty dynalite/dynapro from the picture with the bracket? How fast is this car vs spec miata records?

I like the mod to the duct!

The SCCA webpage shows the SM track record at VIR is 2:14.429. My best is a 2:13.45. I had several laps last week at VIR that were in the 2:15s or lower, but the closest I got to my personal best was a 2:13.66. Things just lined up right that lap, which was back in 2019.
And, yup, dynapros. I was using up a set of DTC-50 pads.
I love that little car...

You're getting great life.

If you're already in there doing a fresh set of pads, I would personally do rotor rings as well purely to save time later.
If you're just checking on them, i'd try to get through the current pad set.

EDIT: DTC50.What pad are you using? My car is also running TSE 11.75 Spec37 and DynaPro, GLoc R12. Its looking like i'll be able to run 3x sets of pads per pair of rotors.

Ive been trackside mechanicing for some MX5 Cup Cars and the rate at which they consume front pads/OEM sized brembo rotors at 180whp is astounding.

Sounds like you're getting decent life. If you're happy with the performance keep doing what you're doing.
