Xidas + probably very light car = what do?
 

I haven't driven it, so maybe this is me just worrying for no reason, but i put the car on the ground on Sunday and was messing around jouncing it by jumping on the door sill.

Details: Light NB1, Xida Race w/ coax mounts, 900/500 main springs, 5" springs in back, whatever helpers/torringtons come with these.

Maybe problem: This thing moves a LOT more when jouncing it this method than my DD build that uses the old suspension from this car. (Bilsteins, 700/400 6" springs, CS100 "zero rate" tenders) And when i say a lot more, i mean 2-3x as much. It's like.... a lot.

What seems to be happening: upon rebound, the helper springs are a rate high enough that they're coming way off block height and "throwing" the car up. Current shock adjustment is in middle of range, so i can go up to increase rebound, but might (again, haven't driven, so this all might be moot) end up with unwanted effects on damping.

Question for everyone but especially Emilio/Dan/Friends: Do you guys run the same rate helper springs on cars that weigh say.... 2000lbs or MAYBE slightly less if i had a great pre-game poop that day? Seems excessive, but i'm not the pro.

Is this a thread about discussing the functionality, configuration, and adjustment of expensive race coilovers based on your experience of jumping on the door sill of the car?

I'm pretty aware of how unscientific and how flawed this is. I'm mostly wondering why the enormous difference in behavior between the two cars. This is uncharted territory for me. I've never had a suspension that relied on helper spring block height to achieve sane ride height, nor have i had Xidas, so double whammy. Help me! Tell me why the difference, then tell me why it doesn't matter and why i won't notice it while driving, but can upset the car like crazy by exerting all 150lbs of my body on it. :giggle:

Obviously i'm going to drive it before i actually freak out (or probably not freak out), this is just discussion.

suspension is not made to control a human jumping on the car and if anything - you are simulating a very soft and gradual bump similar to those meant to slow you down to 25mph as your weight is rather low to simulating anything else. so your worry is probably premature. Just drive it and if you still feel there is something wrong then report back. Having said that - it sounds like your shocks may be on the softest setting if they are allowing the car to jump up after your 150lb apply force downward.

The shocks are on middle setting on all four corners. I understand that this also, will change as i see what the car feels like.

"Worry" is strong. I'm trying to figure out why it's so drastically different from the other car, for science/learn a thing. I know i'm not exerting much force relative to what the car will see, which is precisely why i find it weird that the reaction is so different.

Possible but i find it pretty unlikely. Had about 3000 miles of use and showed no signs of damage or leaking.

1.25" RB front, MSM rear bar on both cars. The "DD" is literally v.2 of the "race car" but with stock seats. Because i'm real dumb like that. :giggle:


Anyways, i should be able to get a test drive in by the end of the week, i gotta finish dialing in ride height and install some ECU brackets. Super involved stuff.

No. Old shocks are awesome AF, fam. I switched to Xidas ONLY to save weight.

Working on it. Car is very low priority so it's kindof a miracle i had time to mess with it at all. It haz alignment, just need to get static height back to where it was with the old setup. Maybe this week. Maybe not.

You should set them to full firm for your first ride. So in a rush to install them when they arrived, I turned them full firm without reading the instructions. That first drive was a bit jarring, to say the least. Other's should enjoy that first XIDA experience ;)

I've driven a few cars with them, alas, so this wouldn't be my first experience. I like the way you think though, and i too, like to go hard.
