Terms people use when talking Turbos
We should make a thread on the the terms that people use for Turbos. Once it is done we can move it to the archives forum. Please add to the terms, and definitions.
Terms for Turbos:
Spool up (process of the turbine spining up to speed)
Heatsoak (Basically the intercooler gets heated enough that it can no longer do its job well.)
FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator)
AFPR (adjustible Fuel Pressure Regulator)
Turbo Lag (delay between you pressing the gas pedal, and the turbo spooling up. Commonly confused with Boost Threshold (below), lag refers only to the delay between pedal application and production of boost when the engine is already above the boost threshold. )
Boost Threshold (Simply put, the RPM below which not enough exhaust gas energy is available to spin the turbine and produce positive manifold pressure. Larger turbines with higher A/Rs have higher boost thresholds.)
Bipes (An ACU used to controll timing)
MBC (Mechanical Boost Controller)
Wastegate (Valve on exhaust side used to divert exhaust flow from manifold directy into the exhaust pipe, bypassing the turbine)
IC or I/C (Intercooler)
Link (Full replacement programmable ECU)
ECU (The computer in the car)
HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump)
Jim's Pipes (Pipes made by Jim at www.15psi.com for I/C's)
Begi (A brand of AFPR)
Vortech (A brand of FPR, comes stock with the kit)
Disks (Changeable disks inside the Vortech, used to change the fuel pressure)
DP (The Downpipe)

BOV (Blow off valve- releases the leftover pressure in your intake plumbing when your throttle body closes. Keeps the turbo spooling for less lag between shifts.)
VTA (Vent to atmosphere- term used when talking bov's. This usually gives your car a whoosh sound or whistle between shifts. Some benefits are: cool sound, and cooler than "recirculating" temps for non intercooled cars)
Recirculating (Instead of venting to atmosphere the excess pressure flows back to your air fuel meter. Some benefits: better gas milage and very quiet- stealth like.)

Boost creep is rising boost due to not enough exhaust bypassing the housing. For example, you're set for 13 psi, and when you floor it, you get a quick rise to 13 or 14 psi. But then as rpm's climb, the boost creeps higher and higher: 14, 15, 16, 17, etc. Enlargening the wastegate hole is one cure for boost creep.

Just a few comments.
AFPR (Auxiliary Fuel Pressure Regulator). A second regulator added to supplement the stock FPR. Example is the Vortech supplied with the basic kit (where applicable).
Adjustable AFPR. Self explanatory. Rather than a fixed rising rate, has multiple adjustable features for better fuel management. Two examples of this are the BEGI and Vortech Super FMU.
FMU (Fuel Management Unit). If you hang with the Honda people or with Greddy's on other OTMs it is probably called a FMU rather than an AFPR.
BEGI. (Bell Engineering Group Inc.) Formerly known as Car Tech. They also developed a turbo kit to fit the turbo from Aerodyne Dallas. Had several names for this kit which included Aerodyne Stages I, II, and III, Aerocharger, TeamProscreen, and Aeromax.
VATN. (Variable Area Turbine Nozzle). Unique feature of the Aerodyne series turbo. The vanes of the turbo opened and closed for a super fast spool up and maintained a rock steady boost level. Did not use a conventional type wastegate but a series of pistons, spacers, and springs. Not adjustable without taking it apart and adding a different configuration. The system was fairly complicated and did not prove reliable for Miata use. Currently not produced for the Miata.

BSFC Brake Specific Fuel Consumption. A measure of fuel consumption against power output. Used to plan the needed fuel supply.
BMEP Brake Mean Effective Pressure. Describes the average psi on the piston through the power stroke. In F/I apps, used to help predict detonation.
EGT Exhaust Gas Temperature
MAP Manifold Absolute Pressure
AFR Air/Fuel Ratio
"Stoich" - Stoichiometric Optimum air fuel ratio for maximum combustion pressure for a given fuel
