205 or 225 rivals, 15x8 rims, autox
Hey guys,
Been reading a lot on this tire, looking for the tyre size who will be the fastest (do not care about feel, just want to go fast...). I know the 205 on an 8'' rim would be the best tire combo for feel, but would a 225 be faster? The GRM article showed that the 225 was a little faster on an 8'' rim, but that was for track use. Since I'll be mostly doing autox next year, I'm wondering what is the best option. Locally, a lot of guys have been having great success with the 225 rs-3 on 8'' rims, and I've been pretty close with old 205 dirreza on 8'', so I'm looking for your inputs on what I should do next summer. Thanks! Ben |
Well, if you want tires anytime soon, 225 is your only option. Other than that, I'd go with the GRM data.

It is for next spring btw!

Is 8" max for your class ??
|
No, but that is what is have, no money for 9's next year
|
225 will probably be faster.
|
But 205s will probably 'feel' better as far as responsiveness and tramlining goes. Personally, I'd still get the 225s though.

If your getting them for autox, go 225. If your going for track setup, go 205. The 225 will give you much more grip for the quick and hard turns for autox but will actually slow
U down on a track since it will take u longer to warm them up. |

Depends how much power you making. I run spec miata and 205 is more then enough for us since we run stock motors.

So lets be clear, on "stock" (spec miatas aren't exactly stock) power you will run faster laptimes on just about any normal track with 225 vs 205 street tires (rivals are what this thread is about). This has been tested many times and beaten to death by people on this forum. You need to go bigger before you won't find a difference between tire sizes on stock power. |
All depends on what track were talking about too. A track with more straight I think a 205 would do better. If the track was short and had lots of right turns, then yes I agree with you.

Have you done any sort of testing to show whether 205s are ever quicker than 225s? If so, have you identified the scenario in which your data fit? If the answer to the above questions are: "no, yes, no, no" then you probably are not adding anything to this discussion. |
225 seems right for my situation I think. Power level is pretty much stock I would say... Remember, I have 15x8 wheels, not 15x7 like spec miata, or the ideal 15x9 for 225s.
Thanks for all the interest! |

I did see that spec miata in NASCAR. He got messed up on the left hand turns because he ran 225s. It was so unexpected. Now if only we can convince NASCAR to have right hand tracks, the miatas on 225s would be king on short tracks of course. because 225s street tires don't warm up on long tracks. |

Do you run 205 sized tires because you are allowed to run wider but have found that is the quickest combination? Or do you run 205 because that's the widest you are allowed?

Spec Miata is both the best and worst thing to happen to the Miata racing community.
