Hey i was thinking about putting bigger rims on my 1993 miata.

I feel like the stock 14's are too small but I dont want to have any rubbing/bumping issue.

what sizes (diameter/width) can I move to without causing any clearance issues?

I was thinking maybe some 16s?

Rims=wheels, use the proper terminology to avoid ridicule. Edit: too late.

For Diameter don't go larger than 15" unless you have a friend offering you some decent 16's for dirt cheap. All the cool kids run 15x7,8,or 9", with a 30-40 offset. Check 949 racing for the most popular wheel, the 6UL. We also run as light of a wheel as possible, another reason we run 15's.

let me rephrase... I want some slightly larger WHEELS
I like bronze on white (which is the color of my car) and im due for some tires, so i figured i would get some new WHEELS then get new tires for those.

So, any suggestions what would fit nicely?

Im also considering some springs to drop me about an inch-inch and a half so keep that in mind

Yikes, I'd save the suspension talk for another thread and even more ridicule.

Anything 15" in diameter, and 7, 8 or 9 wide, with a 30-40mm offset (I think that's measured in mm's). Stay as far under 13lbs as possible.

What's your budget? Did you check the classifieds or 949 racing like I told you to?

Noobs welcome. You'll find here at mt.net, we are WAY MORE about GO than SHOW. Anything you want to do to your car that does not directly have "go faster" as the primary goal is going to get you at least some ****. The problem a lot of Noobs have is that they simply don't know how easy it is to make your car slower with the wrong choice in parts and purchase simply because they look cool and are cheap.

Wheels are universally where Noobs make their biggest mistake. Bigger is almost always heavier, not only with the wheel, but with the tire.

There are several extremely popular wheels for the Miata, and we can narrow it down to the most popular for your needs if you tell us what they are.

First, why are the stock 14's way to small? What is wrong with them? Is it just the looks or do you want to put a wider tire on there specifically with the intent of increasing traction. You know you can get 14" racing slicks, right? If this is about looks, we can get you an appropriate wheel with appropriate rubber if you tell us what the car is going to be used for.

If I suspect correctly, and this is a daily driver and you're gonna stay with a mostly stock engine or even a little bit of boost, and you need to get some decent mileage out of the tires while still being able to drive in the rain, you can't go wrong with 15" Konig Heliums and 195 or 205 Toyo T1R's. http://www.good-win-racing.com/Mazda...t/60-0157.html

If you don't mind poor wet control and less mileage, the same Heliums with 205 Falken Azenis RT615 will do double duty street and autocross.

If you want to run some WIDE rubber, ie in the 225+ range, the only real choice is 949Racing 6UL's. Popular rubber are Hankook Ventus RS3's.
The widest you can go on a 90-97 without needing to roll the fenders are 225's on 15x8 in the standard +36offset the 6UL's come in. I believe that 99+ cars need a little fender at anything less than stock ride height, but I could be wrong.

Go to advanced search, change the setting to search in thread titles only, general miata chat, and then search for "wheels". The results should keep you busy for a while and give you a good idea about what kind of wheels are out there that we use. We generally like Kosei, Enkei, and 949. Crap like American Racing is just that, crap. Actually it's HCC. Heavy Chrome Crap.

my desire for new wheels is driven by many desires:

I like the look of a more filled in wheel well, and I like how bronze looks

secondly, I am planning on making a turbo build my summer project, so i figured I could go ahead and get some wheels that would work well with some boost (enough traction)

But i definitely am planning on keeping this car my daily driver so I need some tires that will have good life in them/good all around control.

I just figured since I am due for some new tires, I should get the wheels now to avoid having to buy ANOTHER set oh tires in a few months when i hopefully have my turbo setup completed.

If it isnt already obvious, money is definitely an issue due to the fact im a full time student right now so im trying to spend wisely.

I currently have the stock wheels with 185/60/14 tires i think they are some old firestones

Im hoping to spend under 700 if I can, I am TOTALLY fine with some used wheels, slap some new tires on and they will ride the same as brand new ones im assuming. and the less i spend on wheels/tires the sooner I can afford all my turbo setup.

I would like to think Im a semi-educated driver? haha I dont know how to answer that without sounding cocky. i feel like i can feel how a car is going to respond and can tell just how hard to push it before it slides out. I like to drive aggressively, but responsibly. Im not planning on any street races but I would like to know if I ever tried, I wouldnt be left spinning my tires once I get it boosted.

I have done about 4 auto crosses but it was like 3 years ago and it was in three different cars ha but i learned the basics like brake/accelerate in a straight line, not in the turns. and I learned how to feel when the tires are about to lose traction. thats about it

Ask that guy if he'll take the tires off.

As long as you're not doing burnouts and expecting F1 grip levels around wet corners you should be good. A couple auto crosses will put a good head on your shoulder about the realities of grip and tires, more than most people at least.
