best autocross tire/dd for 7 inch rim
What is the best tire at a decent price under 100 a piece thats available( rs3 are not) for auto cross and dd. Decent wear would be nice.
thanks |
Nothing in that price range if you want to be competitive. Kumho XS is close to that price, handles heat very well isn't as good in the rain as the RE-11s or Star Specs.
|
Ok how about 120 a tire. I can get proxies for that I think also dunlop direzza are under 100 how are they. Escta ast's are cheap how are they?
|
Well are you looking for a 14" wheel or a 15"?
|
AD08, star specs..
|
Star Spec Z1?

The regular Direzzas are ok in the dry, bad in the rain. Spend a little more and get much better tires. It's the part that keeps your car on the road. |
how do toyo proxes compare

Any of these options are great:
http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/art...-tires-part-2/ Ive used the R1R, XS and RE11 on my car and like the re-11 best for street use. I have 195/50 on some 15x7.5 wheels. I also have a set of 225 R1R that I have on some 9" 6uls. As much as i hate them, TireRack has 205/50/15 Sdrives at 94+ship and XS' at 104. |
Another vote for Star Specs, I love mine they are a really good all around tire IMO.
|
R1R's are the fastest, but wear a lot quicker than a Z1. On a STS car anyways, so add some more power and they'll wear even quicker. They're also a tad more expensive.
|
Dunlop star specs hands down. Key was you said DD and autocross, which means they need to be good in the rain and not wear out really fast. No better tire out there in my opinion. I've had Azenis (old/new), Kumho MS/XS and a few others. Can't afford the fast wear tires and most dry compounds will kill you in the wet. Good luck.

I like my Yoko S-Drives.

^Sure, you can be competitive at the back of the field.
|
Take a look at what the competitive guys run at your autoX events are running, its usually a pretty good indicator.
I'm running 195 sDrives on stock NB 15x6's while I'm still in the rainy season. I got them brand new from a local forum member for way less than retail or I would have done the Star Specs. The sDrives seem to be a very competent daily driver tire, but not when compared to what the more "dedicated" autoX guys run. I'm running 225 RS3s on a set of 15x8 6ULs when I want to have fun, but they seem to hydroplane like a beeeeotch in the rain. I wish I had a set on 15x9s tho... :( |

If you're at the back of the field then you probably just suck. If you're a good driver you should be competitive with any decent tire. I just got a set of Star Specs and I'm happy with them on the road so far. No autocross events yet though to give an opinion on that subject. I just did a similar poll on clubroadster.net.

If you're looking at an S-Drive class tire, you should also consider the BFG G-Force Sport. That's what I'm running now, and I like them better than the S-Drives I had before.

I got a screaming deal on some rims and tires.
16x7 konig's with the new redesigned azenis 205/40r16 Tires are basicly new (can still read azenis in the tread) 1500 miles two and from hallet where he switched to r comps. Decide to make it a trailer queen and sold me these for 500. How much do the azenis suck? |
Well based on the comparison posted Looks like I got the slowest of the high performance tires. I guess I will be ok with that. The rims look great and I got the whole set for what a set of tires would have costed shipped and mounted to my old paint chipping beat up AR rims. I will post up a pic of before and after later. At least I can get a set of rs3 for these rims pretty cheap when these wear out.

RS3s in that size would be much taller than stock, more than 2 inches difference in diameter. The tire selection is kind of limited in 16s. The Azenis are pretty good, much better than their old compound, they'll be great for autocross.
|
if you are talking about 615ks then they are better than the S drives which aren't in the same summer tire group.
With that said, they are probably the last of the autocross summer tires I would use. I didn't like the old 615s and while the new 615k fixed some of the problems with the 615s, they still don't have the outright performance that the star specs can provide. Certainly no big deal though, at this point you will find most autocrossers are not consistent enough for it to matter. Lastly, if you got a good deal on them, then they are certainly worth it. |
Ok so that would be a 1.78 inches difference from the 205/50/15 if i went with the .78 wider 225/50/16 in rs3's and .8 taller than the 205/50/16 that are on there now. I guess once I throw them on I will see what they look like. Anyone have any experence with the 225/50/16 rs3 on an NA or on the track?
Just asking I am going to stick with this for quite a while. The rims are lighter than my 17lb American racing 15's so I hope I have not increase unsprung weight but I dont know. The rims are the konig brite lite http://www.good-win-racing.com/Mazda...t/60-1313.html |
Just FYI:
Toyo T1Rs have a pretty bad rep over here for having a very flexy sidewall. Probably a bad choice for autocross because of that. Yoko AD08s won a UK magazine tyre shootout a couple of years ago. The control car was a NC MX5. I still don't think they'd be as fast as some other choices available in the US for the money, but in terms of steering feel, and other wishy washy subjective stuff that you Americans don't seem to care about  they are apparently quite hard to beat. |
