best way to get caked up paint off my wheels

I bought my miata about half a year ago. has American racing wheels that were black
I noticed after a while the quality of the paint on the wheels was less than acceptable. they chipped easily and revealed a white undercoat.

Met the owner that had the miata before the guy that i bought the car from he was like " so why did you paint the wheels black? you didn't like the white"?

I did not paint these. He informed me that they were originally a smoke clear coated "gun metal" color, and that he painted them white, and now there black...so theres a lot of paint on these.

Whats the best way to go about getting all of the paint off? is it possible to sand blast? these are like 8 spoke wheels it would take a lifetime to hand sand them back down

aircraft remover

dieselmiata 02-19-2014 03:42 PM

What he said. Don't get it on your hands.

y8s 02-19-2014 03:58 PM

hire a stripper.

Savington 02-19-2014 05:33 PM

Aircraft stripper, wear gloves, don't get it on your hands, seriously, don't get it on your hands.

TorqueZombie 02-19-2014 05:49 PM

If there is a part of your body you'd like to keep don't get it there.

Outside away from anything that you ever want to have life again, ambient temp 50* or higher (below that it does not work too well)

Did anyone mention to not get it on your hands?

Even for a second?

18psi 02-19-2014 08:26 PM

so,
spray your hands with it

zacktrotter_uncc 02-19-2014 10:08 PM

ok do i need to take the tires off or is it going to melt to tires off for me?

EErockMiata 02-19-2014 10:20 PM

one time i stripped an old mtb frame with aerosol aircraft paint stripper... I did it in flip flops like a moron. The next 4 days were miserable. It felt like I had the worst case of athlete's foot ever.

so yeah... wear gloves.

dieselmiata 02-19-2014 10:42 PM

Considering what it does to skin and pretty much anything else it touches, I would highly advise keeping it off the tires just to be safe. I don't think it will do damage if rinsed off quickly, but I don't like to take unnecessary risks.

It doesn't seem to affect nitril gloves.

Sometimes I can't believe that stuff is sold over the counter without a license, especially the aerosol version.

EErockMiata 02-19-2014 11:17 PM

Reading the ingredients makes it sound like jet fuel lol.

Jeffbucc 02-20-2014 12:19 AM

Don't get it on plastic either. When you clean it off, and using a hose, make sure you stand far far away from the wheels. I got some on my forehead and felt like I was going to die.

Also if spraying indoors(aerosol version) please wear a real respirator with a charcoal filter of some sort. Your lungs will die. Say goodbye to your cilia!

We put some on a buddies '68 Mustang that was primered. He had no idea how many times it had been painted. Stood around with a beer and watched the fun. Burned through several layers of paint and into the bondo he didn't know was there.

I suggest getting different wheels. Screw messing with this stuff.

18psi 02-20-2014 12:32 AM

we did sorta the same thing: poured a ton of that crap on a uber old hot rod the guy was stripping to bare metal.

that stuff started exploding and shooting the paint everywhere, huge bubbles, looked like some alien horror movie abortion.

it was awesome :D

triple88a 02-20-2014 12:33 AM

Tyluol-tolluene is pretty good at stripping paint as well and not as strong. At last try ordinary paint thinner

zacktrotter_uncc 02-20-2014 10:52 PM

wow. yea i may try a less deadly paint thinner before i spray that on there. but im not sure what type of paint is on it. its not just spray paint.. it may be like an "economy automotive" but its old enough to want to chip off

Jasco works alright.
