Dunlop Direzza ZII
 

has anyone used this tire yet? I never used the dunlop direzza sport zI star spec, but the ZII has proven to be equal, and even a little better.

im trying to decide between the dunlop direzza ZII and the toyo proxes R1R.

im going to be running 205's and i want as much grip as possible for a dd and autocross.

im leaning pretty far towards the ZII's unless someone can talk me into the R1R's

they are pretty much the same price and from my reading they seem to both be really great tires. but ive never used the R1R or the Z1's so i dont really know where to start to try and compare them other than specs.

You will heat cycle the r1r's to death daily driving on them. They need feed and caring, and spraying on hot days. Remember, the 205 has not been confirmed as a "magic" size. So as the tread wears down, you will not know how much of the "good stuff" is left.

If the ZII has similar heat tendencies as the original, spraying is somewhat rare here in PA. In Florida, I'd recommend having one. If it's a two driver car, a sprayer would be required.


The original Z was a jack of all trades. Decent in the cold and wet, and still very competent in the heat. It took a good amount of abuse to overheat them (usually caused by over-driving), and even when over-heated, they are still drivable, and you can still get decent times. Most importantly, they cool quickly after a quick misting. Pro-Tip: If you run out of bottled water, drink out of your tire sprayer.



EDIT: What I liked most about them is their progressive feel. You could feel very well where the grip was, and how quickly it was dropping off. I loved my ZI's, and I'll be buying the ZII for my stock (street-tire) class endeavors this year.

and good info, you basically just made up my mind as well. ive heard great things about the r1r but i think the ZII will be better for my application.

The only single-compound R1R is the 195. Edit: my source for this is a remembered statement on m.net by Andy Hollis.

ZII is supposed to have better heat tolerance, and TireRack's preliminary drive on them showed significantly better wet traction on their autocross course. I will be putting 205 ZII's onto my 8's for wets.

The initial review from Tirerack does look pretty good. If it works as well as both Dunlop and Tirerack say, then it will retain the spot as the go to tire in chumpcar. I wouldn't hesitate to put them on a my weekend miata if I didn't just put a set of Z1's on there.

Nobody's driven the Z2's unless if they're in Japan.

Run Z2 in 205/50R15 or R-S3 in 225/45R15.

Or work for Tire Rack.

these look a little stretched to me on my 15x8s... it might just be the new tread design, but these look skinnier in 205 width than the Z1 version did.

If you're going to deal with all the R1R crap (snow tire like response, heat issues) you need to do it right, have two sets of them, and a set of non-race tires. 1 set of R1Rs will be 195s shaved to ~3/32 (or less) and the other at full depth for rains.

From what I've heard of the ZII they're better than the star specs in every way. The TR test give them like .3 in the dry and 1.4 in the wet. So there has certainly been a compound change and I would bring the sprayer to all the events just in case. And I've already seen a set of them shaved to 5/32 so someone is guessing that is going to make them faster.

Where'd those pics come from? My 225 RS2's are in need of replacement, and I'm deciding between either 225 RS3's or 205 ZII's for my 8" 6UL's next.

Why oh why no 225? All i want is a 225. Is that so much to ask?

Those pics came from my phone. I still have a set of RS3s on my 9s to burn off but decided to go with the ZII this time around for the 8s because i dont like the way the RS3 heat cycle out or work poorly in the cold.

ive heard that tire rack is going to have some 225 45 15's on the website sometime in feb

Where have you heard this from?

I really need someone to figure out if the Z2 or the Rival is the better coldish/wetish tire so I can make a decision.

I wouldn't consider that credible. I haven't seen anything that Andy has said that would lead me to believe that and i have read his reviews from those sessions.

now my desciion lies between buying 205 z2's or buying 225 rivals...if i get the rivals ill need new wheels...but if i stick with the z2's ill be running them on 6.5 inch wide wheels.

225 on 15x9 are the fastest, 205 on 15x8 is also fast.
are 205s faster than 225s on 15x8s?

Why not 205 rivals?

if i stay 205, i would prefer the z2. and if i go 225 then my decision is made for me.
