Well that changes things haha. Not sure how missed that comment from Andy but sure sounds like ExtremeContact Sport is the true winner. Especially for a guy in PA that regularly has cold + wet autoX.

Hey, just want your opinion. Looking to buy RS4 for my car, 15x8 wheels. I'm having a hard time deciding between 195s and 225s... Car is a 1990 miata, BP7 motor, stock power. It's mostly a track toy, HPDE, time attack and auto-x. Car is street driven to go to the track. I was previously on 205 re71r (loved them), but the wear is just too important and these tires are BO at the moment. I know that 225 would be best on 15x9, but I have a hard time putting 195 tires on the car... lol.

Go with the 225. I have 15x9 with 245s. Regardless of which you choose you wont be disappointed. They are great tires.

It's not really clear, but is Andy Hollis saying the 205 width contis are better than 245 width rs4s, or better only in the limited scenario of cold/wet autocross?

Almost as fast as RE71s in the dry isn't bad but I'm kind of hazy how the whole size/compound hierarchy is now. I remember RE71s being a quick wearing cheater tire for "street tire" racing classes, but I might be remembering wrong.

A lot of people say "x is best" but best often means "best for my exact application what you didn't know the local weather and rules of my racing series, are you stupid?"

Nope. 195 - 225 - 245. On paper looks like the 195 is nearly a 205 though. I was planning on slapping some on my 8's once I finish up the 225's that were originally mounted on 9's.

15" sizes as follows

195/50R15
225/45ZR15
245/40ZR15

If you look at the tread widths listed by Tire Rack though, it would appear the RS4 195/50/15 runs as wide or wider than some other popular 205s (specifically the RE-71R).

Tread Widths as listed by TireRack:
RE-71R 195/50/15: 6.6"
RE-71R 205/50/15: 7.0"
R-S4 195/50/15: 7.2"
R-S4 225/45/15: 8.0"

Not sure how accurate that information is, can anyone confirm? Since 205 RE-71Rs are sold out forever, I was thinking of trying the RS4 for my next set, I am on 15x8 (stock power).

You know, as I was writing that I kind of figured that was the case (no 205 offered).

I've never checked because I've always bought 'kooks in the 225 flavor.

Going on 9s to replace worn-out NT-01s and almost-done RA-1s (no, not on the same set of wheels). Reviewing notes from this thread, it seems they're happiest at around 28 psi hot?

We've been running them at more like 36 hot. 28 seems really low. My car is a PTE style NB1 and we run the RS4s when we do endurance races. Based on our lap times (one of the fastest cars at recent ChampCar races, Barber and Charlotte Speedway), and the good wear we've been seeing, I'd say 36 hot has been working for us.

Of course your mileage may vary based on alignment, weight, useage, etc.

I have a tire probe, but have only gotten data on R7s, no tire temps on the RS4s

34-36ish (225 on 9's) is what we ran for WRL at MSRH on a former SM recently. Felt good, turned good consistent/fast laps and got great wear at -3.5f/-3.0r camber. I'm guessing you could get away with 28 hot, but don't know if it'd be any faster and would likely tear up the shoulder more. Might be one of those situations where it merely feels good, but isn't actually better and could in fact be slower.

For us, they seem to be a great balance of grip, durability and cost.

There are "grippier" 200tw tires out there, but the life seems to be ~1/2 of the RS4s. I'm okay with giving up a little bit of grip and absolute lap time to get double the tire life.

RS4 is an excellent Enduro tire. We've run them 38 hot with great success, recently tried 41psi hot and the car felt even vetter. 190whp ecotec Miata, they last multiple weekends.

I currently run 22psi but that's a 245 RS4 on a 10" for AutoX where I struggle to get heat into them fast enough. Havent had the chance to run big track stuff with my car yet, but imagine I will need to bump pressures up.

120 AutoX runs and 5k street miles on the 949 race alignment though and I just had to flip them due to camber wear now, so I'm impressed on the wear properties.

Just got the tires mounted yesterday, light stretch, looks pretty much the same as the re-71r did in 205s. Tire diameter is a bit smaller though, should help with gearing. I'm having a time attack this weekend with the Miatacup Challenge here in Quebec, I'll post feedback afterward.

Let me know what they're like on the street in terms of noise. I just finished a road trip with RE-71Rs and those things are abominably loud (especially on concrete, new pavement or tar strips).
