How much longer can I run these tires?
 

The UPS man just dropped off some new RS3s for me yesterday. I have two options for when to put them on the car. I can mount them tonight, or I can wait until next week. Here's the catch: I have to drive the car 500 miles this weekend, and run it in an autocross, and run it in a test-and-tune (should be like an autocross with about 20 runs).

There's not supposed to be rain this weekend, so that shouldn't be an issue, I just don't want to cord the tires part way through the weekend and not be able to run the rest of the weekend.

I want the RS3s to last as long as possible, so if I can put this weekend's wear on the old tires, it's that much longer the new ones will last. Thoughts?

This is probably the worst one, they are star specs. It's hard to see how much tread is left, but it's not much. They are somewhere into the wear bars on the rear and almost even with them on the front. The edges are the worst, where the tread is completely gone. I think I didn't run enough pressure at the autocross last summer, and I fought with understeer all summer.

I would think they'll be fine... but I wrapped an S2000 around a light pole in the rain several years ago from being a cheap ass and trying to hold off on tires longer than I should have. That being said, I'd put the new tires on.

Change you're tires and your going to be glad you did. Your current tires, there shot, and I wouldn't drive all the way out they're on those. Plus their going to look at you funny if you show up to a HPDE with bald ass tires.

chances are they'll be fine, you still got quite a bit until you start seeing threads.. and then quite a bit till you start seeing wire threads.

Unless you run something over, they shouldn't pop on you. Although they will certainly be weaker.

With what you're going to be doing, wouldn't the newer tires be better for you anyway???

Some places won't let you run at all if you are down past the wear bars on street tires.

Those tires are so thin I can see the air through them.

Once they get that far down they are probably really hard from heat cycling and you'll turn really shitty times anyway. That's no fun.

im sure they are hard and provide less traction than a cheap all season.

Simple fix: just put some oil on them.

My 2c, those are going to cord... not from the 500 miles, but somewhere during the test and tune.

I treat my tires with wet look...I need less rear camber acording to the widewall sear.

So how much pressure were you running? I'm trying to get a starting point for mine, same tires, full weight car, 10psi boost. Running a tight cart track.

Well, I wasn't turbo last summer, but I think I was running 30 or 31psi. I think I'm going to start with 36 in the RS3 and back off from there.
