That's a sexy shot, I love it. Really blends the sunset light into the car while still emphasizing the wheels and body paint.
If you're ordering anytime soon, I spoke with their shipping support and it's looking like 2wks before they'll ship an order placed Monday. Hoping to have the tires mounted and on the car by end of the month.

Wouldn't it be funny if these tires were a huge disappointment, but since there's been so much hype, no one will admit it?

Personally, I'm just happy that the Miataverse finally has a monster sized street tire in something fast, but not a race tire. I think there are a lot of people that will essentially, build a car around this fitment. I bought a set of 245/40/15 Avon CR500's back in 2007 when they were released with DOT stamp. They were crap for a street car but the quest was already on.
Then there are those that don't do any research and expect/hope every new tire that is released to be an RE71R beater. Those people will be disappointed and they'll continue to be with every new 200tw tire release.
edit: Having driven them finally, I can tell you they will make many peoples very happiness

This x100000000. I'll be ecstatic if they aren't an RE-71. I don't do auto-x, and I don't compete on the track. I want a grippy tire that will last. I see this as a z2*/RS3 competitor (when released in 225) but with more size options. If this had been released a month earlier I would have purchased the 205's instead of z2*s

To be frank... I would be a little disappointed if these were re-71r or rival-s class tires. While those are fun, rule breaking tires, they are not friendly to the wallet. I feel like we as a collective car loving group sent a messed up message to the tire mfg's that grip was above all else. It sucks that we lost tires that had the right balance between drive-ability, wear, stickiness etc.
I'm hoping the vr-1 in all sizes fills this void that we accidentally killed. It's icing on the cake that Maxxis has the ***** to make this tire in a size that fills a void like this the 245/40 does.

I got about 5000 miles out of my RS3s last year, May through September. I'm interested in seeing how these will compare to that this year. I had them mounted today and the plan is to head to the Dragon on Sunday.
This might be a silly question but I'm going to ask anyway. The overnight low is going to get down to 27 Saturday night here. Is there any danger in damaging these tires driving in cold temperatures?

I would recommend warming them up slowly, don't shock them with any loading until they build some heat and you should be ok. This is speaking from general experience with other tires in this market.

Depends on what your expectations are. Maxxis is not touting the VR-1 as the ultimate DOT tire. 5 months ago we shared that the performance target was the AD08R. So they will be the right size, and sticky enough to be fun. Will they be faster than the same size RE71R or Rival-S? Of course not.

Not VR-1 related, but I got refused to even get Hoosier A7 shipped from Indiana few days ago. The tire supplier said one exposure of the A7 to sub freezing temps (even unmounted/during shipping) and the tire grip/life will be hurt for good. So they won't ship out anything for a week (temps expected to go up by then)
So ... if temps are heading sub-freezing I would bring those VR-1 indoors until outside is above 32 degrees 24/7

"1. Do not move or operate the car with these tires mounted on the vehicle if conditions are below 32ºF (0ºC). ALWAYS INSPECT FOR SIGNS OF CRACKING! NEVER USE TIRES THAT HAVE CRACKED!
2. Always store these tires indoors and at temperatures above 32ºF (0ºC).
4. Avoid transporting and handling these tires in conditions below 32°F (0°C).
5. Do not mount or dismount these tires when the surrounding work area temperature is under 50ºF (10ºC). ALWAYS INSPECT FOR SIGNS OF CRACKING! NEVER USE TIRES THAT HAVE CRACKED!
6. Before mounting or dismounting, store these tires indoors for at least 24 hours in a temperature-controlled area of 68ºF (20ºC) or warmer. ALWAYS INSPECT FOR SIGNS OF CRACKING! NEVER USE TIRES THAT HAVE CRACKED!
7. Remove these tires from the vehicle and deflate to half the normal air pressure during prolonged periods of non-use or storage. "

All of that advice should go for all of the sticky tires. If you let them freeze, expect them to not be what they were the next time you use them. The compounds that work well and survive at high operating temperatures do not like to be frozen, and the act of freezing will cause changes to occur in the compound.
