I wanted to make a easy way to find certain size tires you are looking for AutoX and track days.

Federal 595-RS-RR's are $312 shipped from Federal (so $78 each before any eBay coupons). Great option for us folks who just track for fun, cheap and sticky.

I'm running 205/55/14 NT01s as an auto-x tire, they work well FWIW |

I second these, for a budget racer they are fantastic and wear forever. The price you pay for the grip you get is astounding. |

And I think this thread is headed towards sticky status... EDIT: Ebay seller 'federaltireofficial' emailed me and said the 15/45/225 is a newly released 595 RS-RR tire by federal. I have probably 26 20 minute sessions and a few thousand street miles on my set of 205 federals and still have good tread left (some uneven wear due to alignment, but good tread remaining). Not trying to thread jack, just these are a budget option in 205 and apparently 225. |
I will be so pumped if those actually come out in 225's. Suddenly tire choice won't be even a remotely logical reason to go 8's over 9's or to stick with 205's on the 9's for the budget minded!

Update. I just received a set of the Federal 595RS-RR tires. They do indeed have a 15/45/225 size. Price was $360 shipped from Ebay. I have never had these overheat on me, they are loud on the street but at this price a great tracking tire IMO.

I just bought a set of 9J 6ULs and these are the first set of 225s I've bought for the Miata. Supermiata big grip kit, ~250whp and 2750# (I blame my passenger on this!) and these barely had any more grip than an ancient set of 205/50R15 Federal 595 RS-R on 8J that are at least 2 years old (and came with the car!). Lap times didn't improve and only really a tiny amount more traction on corner exit was the main difference. They didn't go off which was an improvement (5-6 laps on a 95s circuit with the 205s and the rears would be done, despite 8C air temp and similar track temp) but a bit disappointed with the pace. I wonder if the 200TW RS-RR vs 140TW of the old RS-R is important, but even still, I'd think that the RS-R were sufficiently old enough to be a lot harder. Oh yes, the loudness of the RS-RR is no joke. I used to work in NVH for an OEM and these are the worst tyres I've ever driven on for NVH by some margin. |
Tran: My tracking experience with these was with my NB, stock hp, and suspension mods. The tires held up to the heat, weight, and hp of your car, which is good. Perhaps others will chime in.
I cannot bench mark these against some of the more expensive and popular tires as I have not run anything other than these Federals. For the price I paid, they held up to tons of events and tons of abuse, I think I ran something like 35 plus 20 minute sessions, 4-5 thousand street miles, and the only reason they were done is because my alignment corded the outside shoulder, I still had a few more events worth of grip on the inside. They never dropped grip (in fact I improved lap times every event until I corded them) and never got greasy for me. The noise sucks, yes. RS4s seem to be gone in 245 size. Not even listed on TR anymore.
EDIT: " No need to worry - it hasn't been discontinued, and there isn't an updated version on the way. The way the TR website works is if there are no tires in inventory and no confirmed POs inbound, that SKU does not display on the website. The RS4 can only be ordered by container, and only at specific times, so unfortunately it's not as easy as "We're out of stock in XX size, better get some more on the way." 245/40R15 should be in the next container, but there isn't a solid date for that at this time. Getting my hands on some Toyo Proxes RR in 245/40R15 in the next couple days. Could be a good Hoosier competitor in the 245 size for about $100 less per tire. Tired of wearing through RC-1's and 245 Rival 1.5s's in only a day..... If I'm only going to get a day out of a tire anyway, might as well be as sticky as possible....

Just ordered a set of 245/40R15 RR"s to test on our S1. Will report back with any good A/B data I can gather against RC-1
