Default What size drag slicks?

Looking to run drag slicks on my Miata. I’m trying to find out how tall of a tire I can fit but from searching I haven’t found too many people running drag slicks. For street and autocross tires it looks like around 24” tall is common. I figured people don’t go much larger because that’s the tallest you could fit up front without rubbing. Since I don’t care about matching tire heights I didn’t know if I could run something larger on the back.

You should match your tire size with gear ratio. What gear do you have, and what is your shift rpm? I am running a 22x8x15. I later plan to run a 24" tall tire, and did some measuring. I think it will work with no modifications to the wheel well.

I'm currently running a 24" tall tire, 4.10 gear, and I'm at 6700-6900 RPMs / 107 mph in 4th gear when I cross the traps. A 26" tall tire should work out ok if it fits.

According to my math, you should go 116 mph at the trap with what you have now. Taller tires are better for drag racing, but only if you have the correct gear ratio and power to turn them. You will need to lower your gear ratio or make a lot more power to get it to work properly with a 26" tire.

I think your ratio is pretty close to ideal with your tire size. I calculated that if you have a 4.44, you would trap out at 107 at 6700 rpm. That is the perfect ratio, but would not give you much room to make more power. If you upgraded and made more power, you would need the taller tire with a 4.44

If you put a 26" tire, you will have to do some trimming on the front side of the wheel well. Don't forget that taller tires grow more at the traps then short tires.

a 26 will rub durring high laod if the fender is not pulled and you dont have a stupid narrow offset.

Great, sounds like the 24” tire is the best fit overall for my setup.

This is a 26.

There's not a chance of that sucker actually turning without getting cut to hell by the fender at that ride height. 24.5 is probably your best bet.

Thanks for the picture. What is the offset and width of those rims? It looks like if the tire was narrower and the wheels fit inside the fender a 26x8 might fit depending on ride height. I’m not going to mess with the 26” but was just curious for future reference. I’m already trying to track down a cheap set of 24.5x8x15 slicks.
