225 on a 9 makes the car feel tight, like an 8 year old.

I found the same. My 225/45r15 RS2's on 15x8 +40 6UL tramlined a lot. My 225/45r15 RS3's on 15x9 6UL are much much better. Slightly unrelated, but my 215/40r17 all season Yokohama H4S on my factory wheels also don't tramline.

I've known for a while that I've been wasting the potential of my 225/45 RS3s by mounting them on my 7" wide rims. I have never driven a car on a track and probably never will so rolling my fenders for 9s seems like overkill. I have been planning on getting 15 x 8 6ULs soon with new 225/45s RS3s; but now you have me thinking I might be better off getting 205/50s with the 15 x 8 6ULs. Any suggestions for tires for spirited street driving?

Thanks for the recommendation. I see Tirerack has them for $119. I was kind of thinking about a tire/wheel package from Good-win. I was leaning towards the Falken RT615s. Any thoughts on how they compare with other choices from Good-win, or the Star Specs. The Falkens are $139; but include mounting and balancing. The other tires I was considering from Good-win were Kumho XS, Nitto NeoGen, or Toyo Proxes 4. I've liked Kumhos on a few cars; but am unfamiliar with the XS. I know the NT01 is held in high regard; but am not sure how far the NeoGen has slipped away from performance towards the MiniVan crowd and the same thing applies to the Proxes 4.

The Star Spec is a great all around sports tire. It gets awesome traction in the dry and is good in the rain. The Azenis tend to get very bad traction in the rain and get greasy easier at the track. I can't comment on the street wear on either as I have only run them on Lemons cars.

RT615s aren't made anymore? the RT615Ks are a bit better, but the star specs and/or RS3s are superior in dry performance from discussing it with other miata drivers on track. Not sure about wet.

I know two of them post here, but very rarely.

I think from everything I've read that the 615k is a way better tire now. That being said if your never going to see the track where the RS3 edges out the starspec's that for street driving having a tire good in the rain is a must.

I just saw this and apparently I'm a day late as it has been deleted; but it did give me the idea to search sites and found a set of 1st gen 15 x 8s for sale. I'm sure they upgraded to 2nd gen for a reason; but are those reasons compelling enough for someone who will not be using them on the track to avoid the 1st gen? What's a good price on a like new set of 1st gens?

not sure about pricing, but the 1st gens are good. I know many guys who are still tracking the 1st gens. I think Savington's black car still had them on in the picture taken, but now he is probably on 15x10s.

I would definitely think they are a bit cheaper than 6ULs, then add on any curb rash or damage and powercoat chipping and go from there.

The gen 1 are still good wheels and that set had experienced plenty of hard use (going off track, etc) and were still straight as an arrow last time I had them balanced. The finish was also able to stand up to hawk blues and other harsh brake dust and honestly still looked new. I was only selling them as I wanted to try 15x9. That set literally sold within 2-3hrs of posting on craigslist to give you an idea on price. I saw a set on MT recently that sold for $500ish. I think at these prices they are a deal vs buying new and it probably wasn't worth the extra $$$ I will be putting in to move to 15x9 as I'm not putting in competitive lap times, but whatever :P

Also somebody told me the gen2's don't have a polished lip anymore. The gen 1's were silver with a polished lip and were pretty sharp looking IMO. The only drawback I can think of with the gen 1 is that if you kill one, it will be hard to replace.

I missed out on the used first gen 15 x 8 ULs I had found; so I ended up getting a package deal from Good-win with 205/50 R1Rs. They should be here in a few days. When I wear out the R1Rs I will probably replace with Star Specs. Thanks for the info and merry Christmas.

I ran 205 Yoko s.drives on my 15x8 6UL's and they were fine, sold the tires to a friend in need so I could get a set of 225 RS3s. Don't kid yourself, these RS3s are heavy. The traction is amazing but the car seems to have lost some of its nimbleness. The 6UL/RS3 package is now waiting patiently in the garage for spring while I'm driving on 195 s.drives with my stock NB 15x6s. Wet weather traction is much better with the more street-able s.drive. Nimbleness has returned so I'm giving serious consideration to the 205 StarSpec when I eventually kill the RS3s. Based on my track day and autoX useage, that may be quite some time

Yep, the wheels in my sig pic are some seriously OG gen1 15x9 +36s. I don't drop wheels in that car like I do in the red car, so the wheels last forever.

Right now on a 15x8 you have kind of buldged the sidewall which will make it feel sloppy. A 205 will feel the best on a 15x8.
