Different turbo

I think I'm going to ditch the sr20 t25 and go with something different. Looking to spend about 2-400. Needs to be able to fit an hks t25 manifold for a 1.8. Thanks

what is the end goal? for the money your best bet is getting a hold of gpopshop and having them upgrade the turbo to a t3 compressor wheel.

viperormiata 02-04-2009 11:42 AM

Look for a Nissan Pulsar GTiR t28 turbo. It's a journal bearing version of the gt2560 and they usually sell for around 300 bucks in decent shape.

Braineack 02-04-2009 11:45 AM

IIRC they have a different turbine manifold, but you should be able to swap the old one over. basically what I suggested would net you the same thing, a t28 is a t25 with a t3 compressor wheel.

Turbo_4 02-04-2009 11:49 AM

What about a saab 900 t25? Is that t3 or should it fit.

It's basically the same thing you suggested. I looked into getting one awhile ago because the turbine is t2 flanged and they are cheap to find/rebuild

Thats an interesting idea.

What kinda of gains can be seen after something like this?

your t25 will perform less like a 2554 and more like a 2560

Turbo_4 02-04-2009 12:12 PM

I'm looking for 200whp

Looking at Gpops prices for this modification, 200 bucks doesn't seem too shabby.

How would it perform differently then a real GT2560? Which I think has a larger compressor housing.

Braineack 02-04-2009 12:21 PM

the only difference really would only be ball bearings. the compressor wheel of a 2560 is one in the same as the t3 60 trim wheel.

A t28 is a t25 with a t3 compressor wheel. t25 + t3 = t28

Turbo_4 02-04-2009 12:36 PM

so either a rebuild of what I have or a t28? what about the saab 900

gospeed81 02-04-2009 01:27 PM

I saw a Saab 900 turbo in person before picking up my kit...it looked small. It's also hard to pinpoint exactly which model you have, and find its compressor map. The one I saw supposedly came off of a '92 (has a nice island), but the measurements didn't sync. The model I found that did match those measurements had a substantially different compressor flow map.

You will need to know where it came from, and stampings if you can find them (most just say AiResearch). Then google "junkyard turbo list." Scroll down to Saab portion, find your model number, then *try to find the flow map.

I am probably going to end up in the same boat as you in a couple of months, and the best upgrade path I see is to change the compressor. Basically make your own hybrid for minimal cost. This will also be a great time for a rebuild if needed.

Mine is an IHI turbo, and the Ford Thunderbird compressor mod is popular, but kind of hard to find.

I think you'll have better luck finding parts than I, and the characteristics of a compressor swap are more proven than "mystery SAAB jy turbo."

zoomin 02-04-2009 03:33 PM

Most Saab's used a t3, gt17, or td04. Can't recall if they ever used a t25.

Alright then, guss I will just have my stocker rebuilt. Now, I just need to find a junk sr20 turbo so I can use its' compressor wheels. I think I'll just have majestic rebuild it for me. I think they wanted 230 since I was supplying the rebuild kit.
