Default Single Piece Differential Axle

Hi guys, I recently picked up a torsen swap from a 1997, but the owner smashed the end of one of the single piece axles to bits. I have gone through every local auto parts store, local craigslist, even specialty shops that only specialize in drive axles.... no one has one. If someone has one please PM me with price and shipping costs to 53110.

Thanks a lot guys.

No one sells a complete axle? Or are you looking to just buy the end of the axle?

I cannot find a parts store that sells a complete axle. The closest I got was Oreilly's which offered to ship it away to be rebuilt. Our local Milwaukee miata recycler was out as well. I have not looked to see if I can buy just the end with the threads that got smashed in and try to rebuilt it that way myself. I assumed these were easier to come by and was going to just buy a full axle to get this installed quicker.

2001 MAZDA MX-5 MIATA CV Half Shaft Assembly

Is this what you are looking for or something different? I think this is what you are talking about.
That link has an A-1 Cardone part number witch you should be able to have cross referenced at any local parts store.

From my understanding I thought the 2000 and up had different sized axles??? Or is this incorrect.

Rockauto did not have the 1997 axles available.

If you are using one piece axle with no stub shafts you need 2000 and up if you are using stub shafts then you need 93-97 also use the axle seal that corresponds to the axle year you are using.

For example I have an RX7 TurboII rear in my car ATM. I used to have a 1.6L open then I had a 1.8 open.

TurboII - 2001 miata axle 2001 miata axle seals
1.8L Open - 2001 miata axle 2001 miata axle seals just had to remove stub shafts
1.6L open - 1.6L stubs 1.6L axles 1.6L seals

Drive shaft is different between 1.6L and 1.8L

Ok, now this is another question. If an NB axle fits in a 1997 torsion, i would need different axle nuts, but will I run into issues by running a NA 1.8 half shaft on one side and a NB 1.8 shaft on the other?

That I do not know if I had to I would do it but given the option I would much rather run a matching set. I would say it would work but I don't know what could happen doing that.

Thats kinda where I'm stuck, I can't even source a two piece AND was advised against that, and even with the 2002 shaft, I could have other potential issues.

This means I'm kinda in the same spot. Either A) i try to run the 2002 and hope it works ok. B)buy two new axles for a lot more money than I hoped to spend or C) sit and do nothing because I cannot find the right axle.

Post a pic of your axle and what's broke or damaged I am sure you can find what you need at a reasonable price.

Here are pics of the damage. Guy bashed all the threads of the shaft and the movement inside the boot is very clunky.. I have a feeling its broken inside as well.

I've been down this path recently. Swan, you're right. These just aren't available from rebuilders unless you send them yours.

Used off E-bay is the way to go.

email blake@isellmiataparts.com

He has always been extremely helpful about getting used parts at used part prices. Stand up business in my experience.

Hornetball (I like the builds btw), can the busted threads even be rebuilt? Seems more like you would need a full machine shop and even at that point it would probably need to just be replaced. I was told 14 days to rebuild the axle, no idea on cost, otherwise that 2002 axle from ebay posted above would take maybe a week... Sigh, I think no matter what I'm going to miss the first autocross of the season.

Any input on running a NB axle with the NA torsen and NA axle?

Fooger: I have actually been in contact with Blake, I missed out on their last axle by a few days. He MIGHT have a 1999 and up axle, I didn't know they were interchangeable, so maybe he didn't know either. I can give him a ring and check.

The axles all interchange so far as I know. Also, the swap from 2 piece to 1 piece actually happened on NA's, around 95 I think. Not sure if the busted threads can be rebuilt in this case because that outer CV joint can't be dismantled without special equipment. A-1 Cardone might do this . . . . don't know.

Guys, don't bang on your frozen axles (was that X-rated?).

Ill see if Blake has any NB axles locally (I'm about 20 minutes from him) if not i might pull the trigger on that ebay axle and pray everything works out correctly.
