Parts to Diagnose P0300 - 97 miata
I've replaced:
Fuel Filter Plug Wires Plugs Cam angle sensor Coil pack Checked with brake cleaner for manifold leaks Throws a code P0300 - Random Misfire Only goes off at High RPM/High Speed I'd like another Fuel Pressure Regulator seems like the logical next thing on the list... Or I'd like ideas to what the hell else it could be |

Did you check the crank sensor? That one is responsible for detecting mis fires.

Yes, the crank sensor is the one to look at. It is the one in the front of the engine. It is a small black sensor that sits next to the front pulley.
Basic question, is the engine running smooth? No miss fires or rough running? Is the front pulley wobbling? That will affect the CKP (crank angle sensor) readings. |
Engine runs super smooth, I've checked the crank pully, no wobble to be seen
I'll take a look for the sensor...anything in particular I should be looking for? other then that its there... ? |

(I'll also feel like an idiot for not asking before) The car does have a hesitation when accelerating until you get into the higher RPMs, especially when cold, I'm not sure if that is related or not though |

shit... ok...car idles smooth...very very smooth...
when it throws the code...the car is accelerating perfecting...yet the light on the dash in blinking its little heart out...then goes steady. (usually RPMs are higher then 5000rpm) when it hesitates... thats between 2000-3500rpm just a little hiccup...worse when cold, almost not noticable when warm. |
The crank angle sensor has to be a certain gap on the wheel on the pulley. I don't remember exactly but like .050" or so. Also crud built up on it can cause issues. It's out in the weather.

ok...just crawled under the car again...
cleaned crank sensor as best I could with my roommates toothbrush. Also started the car... so ya...the crank pulley wobbles... |

there was a little dirt on it...but not much... although...my last post...the crank pulley wobbles about 3-4mm in an up down motion....so that would affect the distance for sure.... In the high revs...would it wobble more, therefore throwing off a code? |
I'm pissed off...going for a 2 hour drive to see if I can make use of my CAA

perfect... I just came back from cruising around for a few hours trying to get the light to flip on.... It didn't turn on until I was WOT doing 120mph (closed course)

You can fix a the crank pulley wobble with loctite if you are so inclined. Searce for the loctite fix on m.net for the 1.6 cars. Same thing applies here. Less work than an engine swap.
On the other hand, escort swap is a great opportunity to do a coolant reroute. |
I've done a fix like that on my old 1990...(I used JB Weld, worked great) the pulley still wobbled though...but no codes (I love OBD1)
The pulley doesn't seem to wobble side to side(front to back) like my last one in this case, but rather up and down. I think I'll try to get a new pulley and fix it...when I do the timming belt. in the not so near future... |
alright... well... I've had it... the car smokes more then a baby chewing on an extension cord anyway... so in the next few weeks, its going to be time for a new motor.

The 1.8 L (1839 cc, 112 cu in) BP is a dual-overhead variant of the B8. It was first found in the 1989 Mazda Familia and American-market 1990 Mazda Protege LX. This engine was dubbed BP-ZE and featured a forged crankshaft, piston oil squirters, an aluminum baffled oil pan, and Variable Inertia Charging System (VICS). It also has an improved intake system (a better flowing engine head because of the angle of the intake ports being changed). The Mazdaspeed turbo engine has no VICS, but does have VTCS which is often considered related, but is not. A similar looking but effectively very different set of valves that restrict the intake on cold start for emissions purposes, rather than the torque enhancing set of partial butterflies that increase velocity that are used in VICS. This was found in the 2001+ Miata. The Z family is an evolution of this engine. In Australia, a turbocharged version of this engine produced 210 hp (157 kW) and 206 ft·lbf (280 N·m) in the Mazda MX-5 SP. The United States 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed MX-5 turbo is a BP-4W, not a BP-Z3.
