subframe braces

anyone with a parts car want to hook me up with the subframe braces? thx

miatanutz 10-12-2007 10:59 AM

Which kind? :)
OEM 92-3?
Rears? Fronts?
94-7 U shaped rears?

Ben 10-12-2007 11:05 AM

Need front and rear, hence braces.
I just looked at m.net; Mazda added a rear brace in 92, then in 94 both added the front brace and changed the rear brace. So looks like there's one style of front brace and 2 versions of the rear brace. I don't care which I get, as my 91 is void of both braces. Something > Nothing.

You going to weld in mounting points to the rear to make it work?

Ben 10-12-2007 11:15 AM

ahh... dammmit, really? neither version will bolt on? if I have to weld... then it probably won't be a structural piece :)

None of the factory rear braces will bolt onto your car. The front one you could make work the same way I did. Apparently there's a decent inexpensive aftermarket rear brace you can get for your year, but I haven't seen it myself.

you can very easily make the front brace out of aluminum channel from the hardware store. there are some existing holes in the subframe that you can use.

the rear is a little more tricky: http://www.miata.net/hakuna/0007/aindex.htm

thx Marty. I can do that.

Ben, for the front brace should I just use a piece of flat stock, or should I should I start with a tube and press the ends like this guy did?

Atlanta93LE 10-12-2007 12:52 PM

Start with a tube. Or better, use some hollow square tube and don't press the ends...although that may affect ground clearance.

Thanks

Actually there are some aftermarket rear braces that do bolt on to early subframes...I may even have one somewhere in the parts pile.

home depot wanted $13 for 2' x 3/4" steel round tube or $8 for 3/4" aluminum square tube. that's really about all they had. going to try a welding shop or something this week.

Ben, check miatanet classifieds in the suspension ads. There is a guy selling a rear brace from Duetto for $40 shipped to any State.

If you decide to weld, Mazda sells the weld on points for the updated rear brace with hardware
