Ha! That's a time-sert. It's not a standard part, someone stripped the drain plug threads on your car.

Yup. At some point in the past, somebody stripped the threads on your oil pan, and repaired the damage with that insert.

If the insert itself is damaged (how?) then you're gonna have to source a replacement from a vendor like Grainger, or at a local NAPA / Carquest.

Will it not screw back into the pan? Is the bolt stuck in it? Why do you need a new one?

The threads on the inside are gone from over torquing the drain plug. So it will go back on the pan but can't get the plug in. I'll check the site u referred. Thanks

Forget repairing a repair. Get a new pan and plug. Less chance of leaks that way.

Yea, after a quick search I couldn't find the insert, just the whole repair kit. I actually have a donor motor and will grab the pan from that for now but it's gonna get messy since I only have one engine stand and its already being used.

Helicoil or have the car towed somewhere and weld a new bung on the oil pan. I had a fumoto valve on a past car, and it was great, I just wish it didn't stick out into the pan some and not drain all the oil. So if you remove the pan to weld a bung on, you can cut the fumoto valve to the minimum length and be all set...

Hmm i'm just judging this based on the visual but the fumoto valve looks like its about half an inch. Stock bolt is quarter inch so not much more.

i have a 1.8 oil pan that was tapped and plugged if you want it.
i don't really feel like driving to the city, but you're more than welcome to come here and take it off my hands.

So apparently this is a very common occurance.

My friends 97 and my 95 donor motor both had the same insert. I ended up removing the insert from the donor and putting it on my pan. Problem solved. Gotta fix the donor pan though eventually.

Where can one buy a new helicoil insert anyway? I couldnt find anything online.

FYI, that particular insert is not a Helicoil. Helicoils are made of springy wire, whereas that's a solid insert.

Many companies make and sell them. I've purchased similar inserts from Reid Supply (Reid Supply: Thread Inserts & Accessories).

ENCO also sells them (Enco - Guaranteed Lowest Prices on Machinery, Tools and Shop Supplies)

...as does Grainger (Grainger:Thread Insert Categories).

Alternately, you could stop by a local quick-lube shop and ask them. I'd wager that they've probably got a supply on-hand, to "repair" customers' oil pans after they strip them.
