Want to borrow - 0-1" and 7-8" micrometers

I plan on swapping my ring and pinion swap on my differential and need these two tools. Since this is going to be a one time use, I don't want to add to the project cost by buying these tools, if I can help it. If you have these and don't mind letting me borrow them (there might be a helping me out reward :) ), please let me know. I am in southern california so locals are preferred but I will, of course, pay for shipping both ways if I can't find someone local.

I am out of town for the rest of the month, so I am not in a terrible hurry for these. Total turn around time should not exceed two weeks. Thanks in advance!!

anyone? If I can't borrow them, where is a good source to buy some?

Think Harbor Freight tools are good enough for this job? I love how cheap their tools are but I'm nervous to use a $15 meter on a $800 lsd.

I don't have a problem with harbor freight tools. I buy from them all the time and, while they might not be passed down to my kids, they do the job. I actually looked at harbor freight and couldn't find what I was looking for. The 0-1" and the stand are within my price range :)

Think this would work for the other one? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=47260

mcmaster carr sells the tools as well

posidon42 01-10-2008 11:36 PM

yeah, but those are $$$$ and it seems they only go up to 6"

cjernigan 01-10-2008 11:38 PM

Most tranny/diff shops only charge $100 to set the backlash and everything. Might be worth the insurance.

posidon42 01-10-2008 11:41 PM

true, but then I wouldn't learn anything :)

And I probably won't be able to find anyone here to do it for that price. When I changed out my clutch, I couldn't find a reputable shop in 20 miles that would resurface my flywheel for less then $100.

Guess i'm lucky to live where i do then. Lots of stuff is cheap here like that. FWIW, i would buy the tools myself as well. I figure for $100 i can get the tools and be setup myself for any future swaps.

I agree, I called a few shops and they were asking $300-$400 for the install, even though I have the carrier taken apart and everything.

posidon42 02-10-2008 11:29 PM

after calling around, nobody wants to work on this thing. Even if I put everything together, they still either won't do it at all, or they estimate a $300 bill...

I dont remember the manual suggesting a 0-1" mic, but you do need a dial indicator. THOSE are cheap at mcmaster.

Frankly though, you dont need the 7" one. Make yourself a fixture out of a flat piece steel that has a large C-shaped opening for the 7.031" (7 and 1/32) and grab a set of feeler gauges to get down to 7.003". You can make it with a normal vernier caliper.
