upgrade? if you are putting down any power 1st gear is already useless with the 5speed so why go to the even shorter geared 6?

You can easily fix the gearing with a 3.63 final drive, or if you really want, a 3.3 final

I wouldn't call using the stock a 3.63 r&p "fixing" the gearing. I run the 3.90 with my 5 speed which ends up to be taller gearing (in 1st through 5th) and 1st gear is still ******* useless.

Even verse a 3.30 diff and 6 speed, 1st through 5th gear are taller with a 5 speed and 3.90.

How much power are you planning on putting down because if it's not north of 300 to the wheels I wouldn't sacrifice the smoothness and taller gearing of the 5 speed.

Roadsters arent supposed to have long wide gears like a fatass musclecar anyways :P~ (well unless you put the engine from that fatass musclecar into your Miata)

6-Speed gear ratios: (for anyone that is interested)
1st - 3.76:1
2nd - 2.27:1
3rd - 1.65:1
4th - 1.26:1
5th - 1.00:1
6th - 0.84:1
Final drive: 4.10

I'm willing to trade my MSM 6-speed (which has stronger gears than a regular Miata 6-speed) if you have a low-mileage 5-speed to offer in return. But I don't have another car to use so you'd have to drive here to NJ to do the swap.

HAHA! Where in NJ? You're in Indiana so does it really matter where in NJ? The state isn't that big.

it says Springfield under his avatar. He'll be in Point Pleasant today. Hopefully he'll be leaving in a Squirted MSM.

I'll send you a low mileage 5speed for your tranny. Paul will swap that out for you, but he might charge you for it.

I am on the edge of parting out my turbo setup, but it would only be worth it for the tranny I have if you came to Ohio to pick it up. I have a beautiful 04 mazdaspeed miata 6 speed sitting in my garage currently.

I have one with 5k miles I'd be willing to trade with you.
I can send it up in a UPS truck, you swap, and send back.

Nope, it's chilling in my garage along with a billion other parts. I have the plate and shifter for it attached. It shifts so perfectly it's better than butter
