The intercooler is already pretty far forward but,any chance of squeezing it into the mouth? Maybe switching to a more traditional style intercooler instead of using a downflow will make it easier to fit. You probably could free up a few inches and make life easier trying to fit a radiator.

And of course a big +1 on using a spal fans.

Btw, great build

do it subaru style and mount the ic on top of the engine and get a big *** hood scoop (since you have to cut up the hood anyway)

I thought about that but I really don't want to see the intercooler when I'm driving down the road the engine is bad enough to see over. If the intercooler was on top I would need like a 8 inch cowl to cover everything and I wouldn't be able to see anything.

true. you could put it under the engine too like the oposite of ^ that, but that might not be too good on a street car.

I kinda like dual side mounts too. You'd need a gay-D-M tite body kit kind of bumper to get air to it though.

Ok I managed to put 10 lbs. of **** in a 5 lb. bag and here are the pics to prove it. I even have a 1/2 inch for fan clearance. Here you go. Now all I have to do is run the plumbing and some intercooler piping.

Here is a pic of the stance of my car with the engine trans and new RX-7 rear in it. Still do not have the battey in or the drive shaft and no gas so it will go down a little more. I also got all the rear suspension rebuilt with all new energy suspension bushings and the rear has energy suspension bushings as well. the pics are not that great but you get the idea. I still need to fab up some sort of rear bracket to hold the nose of the rear.

I haven't really figured that out yet but I am trying to convince my body guy to do it for me that way he can mess it up. For the time being it will go with out.

Cool Swap, you have made some fantastic progress in a hurry!! But to be honest I am disappointed by how high the engine sits above the hood line. I like the idea of crushing the guy in the corvette with his girl or the guy in the porsche for that matter, but all that engine sticking out advertising its intention kind of takes away from the idea. There is something to be said for the whole sleeper theory!!

I'm really digging this build suddenly..

Just wish you could pull off not cutting a hole in the hood.. It'd be so much better all concealed under it..

I say just go with a DIY cowl induction hood. It'll keep people from seeing the beast plus it might be bait for muscle car guys. They'll be like "look at this ***. He put a hood on his miata and thinks he's fast. I'm gonna smoke his ***" Then a couple minutes later they're on the side of the road crying and wondering what just happened.

I am still looking into getting a cowl I just have to wait to see how much actually sticks out of the hood. If I can get away with like a 6 inch cowl I will otherwise I'm gonna have to think of something else.

A decent hood could end up being the most expensive part of your build. Looking at your build pics it looks like there is a substansial amount of engine that will be sticking up above the hood line.

If I remember correctly there is lots of discussion on cowl hoods in the engine conversion section at miata.net so you might want to look there.

From the pics I was thinking that you only had about 3-4 inches of engine above the hood. The turbo would make a cowl pretty wide though. And I dont think it should be too expensive if you or a friend custom fabs one. If it were me I'd cut a hole big enough in the hood and either buy or make a shroud/cowl to go over it and then rivet it to the hood. I think it would look tough.
