Flash/mics should be. Lens should be as long as you stay with the same mount. Batteries will likely not be.

Alright so I think my plan is to get the t2i. Play with lenses, flash whatever. And then maybe get a 7D if needed.

There are basically two Canon DSLR line up options- full size sensor and smaller APS-C sensor. The smaller sensor is found on the less expensive cameras and uses the EF-S senses which cannot be used on the full size sensor cameras. That said, if you started with a T2i you could upgrade to a 7D later because they're both APS-C/EF-S.

The benefits of the 7D over the T2i are clear. But at double the cost of complete T2i kit, you have a superior body and no lens. It really comes down to what you want to spend to get into a DSLR and how much of that you want to spend elsewhere.

I still think its a no brainer. Especially buying used. I can always sell the t2i body later.

Just keep in mind when you keep talking about keeping everything and swapping the body: You're looking at a $45 lens that will come with the T2i. So if you're serious about it becoming something you'd like to invest some money in in the long term, I would consider buying a nicer lens to start with and then whatever body you want for the time being.

Also bear in mind that the T2i body will be worth ****-all in a year or two.

Resale value of bodies only really matters for the first year, MAYBE two after they're released in terms of used market.

I'm buying used. So shouldn't the depreciation already have fucked someone over?

I guess this is where I'm at. I'm looking for a starter. For all I know a T2i is perfect for me and I never want anything more. Very high chance of that happening. If I start to like this **** more, maybe I can get a better lense, maybe some other stuff. Maybe upgrade to a 7D. But right now I want CHEAP (while still not sucking).

Agreed- I think it's high on value, still offering good performance and features, while already taken it's big depreciation hit. Two years from now you can buy a 7D for the same or less.

I won't knock that 18-55 kit lens. It's one of the best EF-S kit lenses Canon has made and ranks near the 50 f/1.8 in value for performance. This is coming from someone who has owned and used spread of L lenses on DSLRs since his first Canon D30.

I just buy decent point and shoots on ebay from years past. Im too hard on cameras to spend money on a good one. I really like the olympus 7030. I just got my third one for $30

I spent 2 weeks with my dad's camera, and I do pretty well about remembering to put the lense cap on and everything. We'll see how long it lasts

My old roommate would take his 6D with a $2k lens out on the lake where we proceed to drink 14 beers and wakeboard. Just buy Insurance and enjoy having a camera. lol

Also, the 7D is 6 years old now :P

EDIT: And a wrist strap. My insurance covers water damage, not "it's at the bottom of the lake, damage"

I have a camera bag stitched onto my chest protector. Its how I quickly can get the camera out and get shots like these before the rider can get up and collect his bike:

It also sits on my workbench and sometimes gets forgotten about and then gets sprayed with grinding sparks or whatever. Im an *******, I know.

Everyone of my cameras has died due to dust ingestion.

My deductible was too high with that. I took out a plan that basically covers all my electronics for like $90 a year with a $20 deductible. So if I drop my phone or something I could claim that and get it fixed.

I think my deductible is 150? Something like 200 a month?
What is your plan called.

Have you ever made a claim against this $90/year plan? I am curious too.

I love my new phone that finally has USBOTG for MS funtimes, but I'd much rather not have to pay for a new phone when I break the old one.

My only renters insurance story.
Buy phone off swappa for $250
Phone got *lost*. (I think it got stolen, but I was too drunk at the time to actually be a reliable witness)
Claimed that my phone was lost.
Got paid full retail for said used phone ($650)
Buy another of the same phone for $200 because depreciation
Profit with $450
