Well that was fun. Just got home from the hospital. Hailey went into surgery last night at 10pm for an ovarian cyst. It was the size of an orange. Surgery went great, thank good we weren't in the Miata. She winces over every bump in the jetta.

Pulled apart one of my spare vvts. Now I know why it was knocking. Also found a sliver of something non metallic in the pickup screen. So it needs a full rebuild. Hopefully the crank is ok.
Got my flex fuel sensor mounted. And started on a bracket for the FPR. Small chance I will get it all installed for the next track day buy likely will be a bit longer. I'd also like to get a knock sensor installed with the knock module. But don't want to pull apart the megasquirt again.

Yes it's the same exhaust cam.
we just went through this with our race motor. Basically the entire oiling system needs to be replaced. Cam gear can be rebuilt, vvt oil lines can be cleaned, but oil pump, cooler, vvt solenoid, and anything else I'm forgetting is trash. Block and head need to be disassembled and hot tanked. Cams on mine (worse rod knock than that) were ok.

Interesting. I planned on doing a full rebuild on this one anyways.
VVT solenoid will be harder to find. I'd like to keep on head as a spare to sell/build later.
I have the extra crank from the auction car so not worried there, I gotta get the ring thing figured out then start acquiring parts.

The valve body appears to be easy enough to clean, but the solenoid, not so much. I might try putting it in a bucket of brake clean and hooking it up to the MS in test mode, see what I can get out, but without being able to look inside it, you never know what's left.

The cyst thing sucks - I remember driving the road home from the hospital a few times to note the potholes for the ride home for my ex who had three of them out.
I'll have to look, I may have a spare solenoid in my spare valve cover. :-) If you're tossing your cam gear, I could use the little springs in it - I gave a way several of mine out of my actuator to another board member, and I would like to be able to still use the gear some day...

Sounds like I should be able to clean it out. I need to have both heads checked. One of them was in an accident and who knows if anything is wrong. If one of them is toast the cam gear is all yours.
Thank god we have the jetta. If I had to drive her home in the miata we would have had to go back to get the internal bleeding fixed after some of the bigger bumps.

Open track at ORP tomorrow. 7 hours of track time. Will be a real test of my car out there.
Plan is to run half the day wastegate wired open to play with my stock miata friend, and then hook the wastegate backup to try and keep up with Ed.
Then another track day next thursday.
Then no license in July :(

First open track day complete. I don't ever want to go back to sessions. So much time, no pressure. Got in over 70 laps today. Fastest of the day I was able to get down to 2:01.8. And that was ***** out driving. Not sure I have much more in me. Here is a big dump of pictures from it.
Oh and my random misfire is back.
