Default 130psi fuel pressure at Idle= Begi FPR fail

My car developed a stalling problem when I lifted the throttle. It also would stumble at low rpm during acceleration. It would always start right back up and drive, and even idle as long as i didn't touch the gas pedal. I throughly investigated the ignition system, and everything checked out, but the plugs were fouled. Stumped, I hooked up my fuel pressure gauge, and as soon as I started up the car the gauge pegged at 130psi.

After disassembly of FPR I found a crack in the shim, which allowed the fuel to get behind the shim. Then the fuel pressure forced the shim to seal closed. With fuel unable to exit the FPR it maxed out my HP pump= 130psi.

I just glad not to have blown a hose and started a fire.

Is it normal for the Begi fpr to fail in this manner?

Probably not.

This is the first time I ever hear of such a malfunction in my entire time on this forum.

Never heard of that either. Good thing you found it though. Fuel leaks are never a good thing.

Which BEGI RRFPR do you have??? I have one of the very early ones...failed the other way....car started running lean and detonating under boost. I tested it and found that was not increasing fuel pressure under boost. At the time, BEGI's rebuild service was only about $10 more than buying the re-build kit alone. I sent in the RRFPR to Begi and was surprised when I got a call from Corky Bell a few days later to tell me that he had personally rewelded and re-machined the seat in the FPR body and tested the repair. Pretty impressive service on a 12 year old part.

All you need to do is replace the shims. If the shims get dinged, cracked or wrinkled in any way, it will not work properly. Damage is usually caused by dirty fuel or the piston spiked and dinged the shim.

The shims can be ordered online along with the small gaskets. I would recommend replacing it in a gasket, shim, gasket, shim order.
Hope that helps,
Stephanie
