so i just got a 90 miata with a 5 spd. im really itching for more power. i want to go turbo but im still in highschool and only have $400 coming to me every month.but i go to a vocational school and have already learned machining,welding. so i was hoping to build a set of headers that will connect to a turbo. and i was hoping to use the stock intake manifold. and injectors from a 1.8 to be as cheap as possible. but i was wondering if i would be better starting with aftermarket headers? (are stock headers restrictive?) how many psi will stock internals stand up to? i was thinking of using an air to water cooler off of ebay. good or bad idea? im also planning on using a td04 turbo. looking for any help i can get. dont know much about turbos.

We don't really call them headers if they connect to a turbo. We call it a turbo manifold..

You can use your stock intake manifold.

Injectors from a 1.8 will get you started sure.

You can't use your stock headers with a turbo. Used aftermarket turbo manifolds can be found in our classifieds, but first how about you introduce yourself in the newbie section and show us some pictures of your car?

How much psi can the internals hold? Well before you get flammed, psi doesn't matter. It will be depend on your turbo. This information can be found by searching. Check out the build threads to see what others are doing.

I'd personally just go with standard intercooler.

Lof people use the td04 turbo on here. Try a search in the build section.

You have a lot of reading to do. Try that first, we dont' really like to spoon feed here. You will also need to use something to add in the extra fuel needed for the turbo. Most people go with a Megasquirt.

On $400 a month your best bet would be to first get a DIY megasquirt kit (it's the standalone/piggyback ecu of choice around here for cheap people), and get your car working with that installed.
If you really think you can build a turbo manifold then go for it. If not, a Begi Shanghai turbo kit like this is your best bet, although you'd have to save your pennies for a while.
I'm in a similar boat as you in terms of wanting power and not having money, so I decided to hold off on the turbo kit until I have the coin to do it properly. Also, if you don't have a proper roll bar then get that first.

The answer to your questions is easy. Save your money for 8 months. You will then have $3200. Buy sweet turbo parts and make awesome power.

PS - 1.8 intake manifold will not fit on your car.

Search for "il tacotaco" on ebay. He sells a log style manifold for the miata at ~$100.
You could fit a Volvo Td04h-13c (Volvo 700/900) You would need to skim the surface though. I have seen pics of the Td04h-15g of the Volvo 850. These can be made to fit the same way.
Get it with the hard waterlines, they offer a good start.
The exhaust is not to hard to fabricate. Get the Volvo downpipe with it and modify it.
If you are on a budget, add a intercooler later.
You will need an engine management system though.

You seem to be a complete beginner here. Read read read. In your case I'd recommend installing a megasquirt before even thinking of making a turbo kit. Then read some turbo install guides to get to know what you need in a turbo kit.

In reality though the megasquirt will give you plenty to play with until you have enough cash to get a turbo kit.

Chuckie the advice given here is great including the suggestion to check out the FAQ. The advice you been given came with gentle poking so consider yourself lucky. Now, let me add that you should buy from Amazon or some other source the book by Corky Bell, Maximum Boost. It's a great read and will teach you a ton of great stuff to know about turbocharging a car.
