Well...the numbers are in....compression numbers that is.



#1 125psi

#2 155psi

#3 55psi

#4 125psi



retest



#1 100psi

#2 165psi

#3 50psi

#4 127psi





Plans are underway to replace the motor.
No plans on figuring out if it's the head or the block. Don't care...would rather replace with a fresh engine anyway.

Switch the headgasket to an older one so that you can run the coolant reroute when you do the swap.

I say find a good 94/95 short block, move your head over and run that while you build a new bottom end. That should be a weekend job and give your current compression numbers it'll feel like a new car.

Yeah, as much as I'd like to build an engine or swap parts around, I don't have the time. I'll just be getting a stock replacement engine.... with under 1,000 miles on it

Swap and go...no worry about t-belt, seals, water pump...nothing. I'll likely end up trying out a dual t-stat setup in the process. The only modification to be done to the new engine will be swapping oil pans over.

One day I'll pick up a block and stuff some rods in it and do whatnot, but right now this is my only car and I need down time to be minimum.

Sorry to hear the bad news, was the engine on it's way out or was it fine one minute and then bang?

What were your comp readings previously and how much boost?

Regarding your engine swap Doppel, why not see if you can narrow it down to valves? That might save time and $. Also, you are running pretty high boost with your setup and if you can salvage your current motor, mebbeyou could save up for a built bottom end; your rods are probably bent at that power level?

The leakdown test would have shown a valve leaking.

Yeah, just did two compression tests- no leakdown.

A local guy who is well-versed with doing swaps is going to help me (along with a few members of our local forum) and he has already offered to buy the old engine...which will help reduce the cost of whatever engine I buy. I've found one with just onder 1k miles and another with 22k miles. The only parts swapping I'll be doing is the oil pan.
The issue was sudden, but then again I hadn't done a compression check before so it could have been going on it's way out.

Fae- I'd just rather swap in a fresh engine over pulling mine, checking the head, checking the block and going from there. I know it could all be done for less monies, but it's more down time...which I don't have because this is my only car. One day I will aquire a spare block and do some rods and a few other things so I can go for the mid-300's.


It was suggested to me that I may have lefted the head a bit/stretched the head studs. While I have not heard of that in the Miata community, anything is possible and given how long that engine had been seeing 10+psi of boost and abuse. We'll see.

10 psi is not an abuse at all even for a stock engine.
Please take some photos of your pistons to identify what caused the damage.
You didn't answer me how much miles did the engine had before and after the turbo.

On the 01+ head gaskets they changed which oil and coolant holes were open. Consensus is that with the stock 01 head gaskets the coolant reroute is not the best idea. There is a big long thread on miata.net about it, with pictures of all the differences. I will see if I can find it for you later.
