I am nearly certain that the driver of that supra did not downshift - he stayed in top gear (6th I think) and just jabbed the gas and waited, knowing the other car would fade into the rearview in just a few moments. Had he downshifted and actually tried the spool up process would not have needed an intermission for bathroom and drinks as in the video.

Its possible. Supras are so well underdriven in their top gear (MkIV's 6 speed is around .78:1 IIRC; MkIIIs is .75) that full throttle at just above idle does nothing. Practically no noise and no indication whatsoever of throttle position, whereas in the powerband (of any car), throttle position is easy to listen for.

Could be Doppler shift. But it does shift like an auto at the beginning of the video.
