OK, here we go. You need this:
Amazon Amazon

You're running your XBOX through HDMI but don't need to. Your XBOX will still output a full 1080p signal through COMPONENT, and you can use y-adapters to split the audio signal to your receiver before it gets to the TV if you don't want to route the video through the receiver too.

Be sure your TV will accept 1080p through component... it will almost certainly take 1080i through component, but if your TV will not accept 1080p through component, you can set your XBOX to just output 1080i and be good.

Are you responding to my original question? I'm not using HDMI at all; I'm using VGA.

My setup is now

XBox -- VGA -- TV (video)
XBox -- optical -- receiver (audio)

You're running this cable currently?

Your amazon links don't work.

This is the VGA cable I'm using.

Amazon Amazon

Plus a regular optical audio cable running from the optical audio output of the XBox to the optical audio input of my receiver.

Yup, that's the same one, but I don't understand.

You're running an optical audio cable directly from the XBOX to the RECEIVER... why do you need the TV on to play a CD?

You have those RED/WHITE cables... they carry an audio signal. Why not plug them directly into the receiver?

You need 2 of these:

And 2 of these:

Because that's not how it was setup at the beginning of this thread?
