Default MSM Cams

Does anyone know the specs of the MSM cams. I'm trying to find out if they are any different than the 99-00 Miata Cams..

Looking for:
Duration
Centerline
Separation
Lift

on both Cams

Here is the info i've found on the 99-00 so far.

http://members.aol.com/solomiata/cams.html

Thanks,
Mike

They are different. But I have no idea what the specs are.

yeah they have different part numbers.. I keep hearing the 99-00 engine is the same as the MSM engine but the more detail I look at it the less I find this to be true.

If you ever get your hands on a set of the MSM cams please try and take a little time to spec them out. Would be nice to hear about them.

No & No
Anyway, remember the MSM has a redline of 6500. So I'm not too sure what would happen with same cams in a 7500 rpm motor.

Really the bigger thing to look for is overlap.. on a turbo car you don't want valve overlap.

Hey Ben

one of the mods over at mazda-speed.com was saying the cams are the same part number as the 99-00. Are you showing the same thing? his info was from a UK Mazda Parts CDs. I'm guessing you have access to USDM Mazda part numbers? Can you see if the part numbers match?

The MSM cams had different markers cast in them.

As far as part #s go, I'll try to remember to look it up Monday.

Mazda isn't showing different cams for '04-'05 turbo/non turbo, but here are all of the NB cam part numbers if it helps any.

2004/2005 Intake - BP5A-12-420
2004/2005 Exhaust - BP6F-12-121
2003 Intake - BP6D-12-420C
2002 Intake - BP6D-12-420A, BP6D-12-420B, BP6D-12-420C
2001 Intake - BP6D-12-420, BP6D-12-420A
1999/2000/2001/2002/2003 Exhaust - BP4W-12-440
1999/2000 Intake - BP4W-12-420

The intake Cam has to be different between the MSM and the Non-Turbo 04-05 Miata

MSM doesn't have VVT

Sorry for my ignorance but what do you mean by "markers"?

Thanks for the help.

The center of the cams have identification markers. IIRC, 99-00 cams have BP embossed on them prominently with 4W embossed but harder to see. And IIRC, the 04-05 MSM cams that I looked at last week had B5 embossed on them.

Per MazdaEPC, the MSM uses a unique intake cam, with a BP5 part number. All 99-05 miatas use a common exhaust cam with a BP4 part number. 01+ intake cam is BP6.

So I wasn't crazy

I don't know about you not being crazy but thanks for looking it up.

i'm getting conflicting info on this from what I consider two reliable sources. Argh !!

The exhaust cam is the same number 99-05. The intake 99-00 and 04-05 turbo are the same. The 01-05 non-turbo is different byt the letter on the end which usually means a minor difference. In this case a difference cam gear is used probably for the VVT system.

How can I put it gently... He's wrong

I just looked at a MSM cam, clearly has "5A" embossed on it (My memory was wrong when I claimed it was B5--it's 5A; I just looked at it). I posted the 99-00 intake cam markers earlier in the thread.

The turbo cam is not listed as a revision to an existing part; it's listed as a completely new part. Why would Mazda make the same camshaft with 2 very different part numbers? The 99-00 cam is still available for purchase from Mazda.

I'll spell it out
99-00 4W intake: BP4W-12-420
04-05 turbo intake: BP5A-12-420
01-05 std intake: BP6D-12-420
(revisions not listed)

As far as cam specs go, I have no idea. But it is defiantly going to be different.

Cool thanks for all the work it is appreciated. now if you would just sell me the intake cam I would spec it out and end this.

My cam
Though I am not opposed to letting Randy Stocker measure it up and put info on his site to make it more complete.
