Default Plenty of problems!

Hi Guys,

A bit of transatlantic advice needed if you dont mind!

Sorry if this is the wrong place for it, but I couldnt see a "problem page" on the forum.

I'm driving a 1996 European 1.6 with a Greddy TD05 turbo, trust intercooler, fuel pressure regulator and 1.8 injectors.


I have been having a lot of problems with detonation in the engine lately. It was first mainly in 4th and 5th.

First thing I did was drop the timing way back but the detonation is still there.

I thought that it might have been the spark plugs as the ones that I was using weren't the right ones for a turbod car.
No joy with the spark plugs changed them on Sat night and the engine is still detonating in 4th and 5th.

I don't know what to do at this stage. I put in a boost gauge and its only running at 4 Psi. the set-up I have should be good for 8 Psi.

Two other problems as well, when the car is cold the fuel delivery isn't great into the engine, it seems very "chuggy" for around 30 seconds and then its ok, its like as if the choke is very slow coming in.
This only really started happening when the fuel pressure regulator went in.
The AFPR is set to around 46 Psi when the car is idling.

About a week ago the car started sounding unhealthy, as in the revs would drop to around 300 and then shoot up to around 1200 to stop it from stalling, and then drop back down.....


Well there is my short story, any advice welcome and appreciated.

What is your timing set at? If it's still knocking, retard it more.

Check your fuel pump and filter, you might not be getting enough fuel due to a failing stock pump or clogged fuel filter.

What AFPR are you running?

When do the revs shoot up?

This is the regulator, I'm nto sure what make it is.

Running timing of around 4, I dont think its the timing though cause I have dropped it way back and it didnt make any difference to the detonation.

Fuel filter is only 4 or 5 months old so I doubt thats the problem. Fuel pump is a possibility though I suppose.

As for the revvs shooting up, if I let the car idle then after a few seconds the revvs drop, and then its like the car tries to stop itself from stalling by raising the revvs to around 1200, and then it drops back down again....

Have you made any changes to your setup lately? Take apart and assembled the inlet air tubing, cleaned out the intake manifold or similar perhaps? Could be that you have a leak somewhere, since you are both low on boost and have an idle problem. If the car is getting more air then measured by the AFM, it can cause idle problems. Your IAC can not do much about that.

Lets see... no problems before installing new fuel pressure regulator.
After installing, you have bad detonation and poor idle.
I wonder what the problem could be?

Do yourself a favor, don't cheap out when it comes to fuel delievery. Send that POS back where you go it and get the unit that everybody esle does... a Begi 2025. You can buy one new, but they're available in the classifieds all the time for about 1/2 of new.

whats your fuel pressure in boost? Idle figure doesnt mean jack.

Also, you might want to look into an O2 clamp. Unplug your stock o2 for a few minutes and see if the detonation goes away.

I bet the fuel pressure gauge attached to his AFPR isn't accurate so its' reading would be speculation. A good fuel pressure gauge is about $10. There's also the possibility that it's installed incorrectly. If the lines are routed backwards it might cause the issues he's seeing.
