How (and why) to Ramble on your goat sideways
Not to call you ignorant, because you may very well know this, but most people don't.
There's a very large difference between a Montero and a Montero Sport. Legit Monteros are very very very good vehicles and used to great success everywhere around the world. Closer in capabilities and reliability to a Land Cruiser than a Montero Sport.
I haven't decided for sure on one, but they're in the running because of the exact statement you just said keeping them dirt cheap. It's a lot of "truck" for the money. I'll take a Land Cruiser any day over one, but i can't get a nice Land Cruiser for the same money.
What the legit Monteros are, are rebadged Pajeros. Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol. All in the same "tier."

The Monteros are very difficult to get parts for unless you can source them overseas. They sold like **** here. The Montero Sport was bad enough for expensive parts and they really outsold the Monteros.
I'd buy a chevy blazer, swap the valley gasket then drive it till it died. Everything GM made in the 80's and 90's fits a blazer, and there's soooo many of them. 5 speed is boss, if you can find it in a 2 door, 4l60 blows chunks daily.
Something is wrong with me though, so I wouldn't advise a blazer.

I seem to remember the S10 with tree fiddy swaps being reasonably quick on the street. Same with the 302 in the rangers. No idea how well they work as real off road vehicles, though.

But lets talk about brick & mortar vs Amazon online. With nothing in the way or research to back my hypothesis, I believe the 'typical' Walmart shopper likes to go look & feel & touch & buy at the moment they have money to spend while the typical Amazon shopper is doing it out of convenience and has an abundance of credit and consider time of secondary importance.
In the end, of course, price (corporate buying power / low overhead) and convenience (everything under one roof) proved to be much stronger factors in dictating the direction of the consumer's dollar. Thirty years ago, few would have predicted that such enterprises would come to represent the dominant force in global retail. And it would be folly to assume that a similarly paradigm-shifting business model will not someday displace them.
I make the following prediction: In addition to same-day delivery (which is already a reality in some urban markets), Amazon will be the next Sam's Club / Costco. Except you won't even have to browse the aisles; they will be off-limits to humans, and populated exclusively by robots and conveyor belts.

They just have so many factory flaws, GM gives no ***** about the metric chassis and its platforms. Shitty brakes, horrendous suspension geometry (they actually have positive camber gain in the first few inches of travel), fuel system nightmares, intake gaskets on the v6s as mentioned, and both engines can be difficult to work on depending on the job, I can go on.
I love s10s and im just being overly critical because I know them too well
They dont do offroad. They like to rip the upper control arm mounts off, and the frames are made of spagetti.

Yes, I agree.

But, those smaller local establishments still operating tend to be the ones who've built up a specialty business and cater to a certain clientele who expects to pay a bit more for that service.

Somewhat relevant to the conversation, recent news on Sears illustrates how fucked up things can get in the retail consumer goods business. Anyone remember the 600page tomes that showed up in the mail called the Sears catalogs? Now look at the company bleeding what's left of the shareholders money and basically taking advantage of the tax laws to shelter money for some. Hard to count beans when there isn't any left to count unless your just using it as a shelter. Interesting quick read;

Sears reports a rare quarterly profit by selling good stores - Fortune

I have neither a crystal ball, nor a stake in this situation. And I'm admittedly playing the Devil's Advocate here. But arguments such as these seem reminiscent of prognostications of years gone by that megastores such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Home Depot and the like would encounter difficulty in competing against small, local retails of like goods on the basis that the latter were better able to provide personalized service and expertise to the shopper.

Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Best Buy are not boutique stores.
For that matter, the boutique approach had already failed miserably in big-box consumer retail. Anybody remember The Great Indoors? Mervyns? Service Merchandise? Computerland? Egghead? Babbages? J&R? The Wiz? Tweeter? Incredible Universe? CompUSA? McDuff? Radio Shack? Burdines? Harold's? Jay Jacobs? County Seat?
It's damned hard to compete against megastores in the razor-thin-margin world of consumer retail. And the big-box stores are going to find life increasingly difficult once the zero-overheard über-retailers universally solve the last-mile problem.

2lt isn't exactly a point in its favor either. It does happen to be selling for a shockingly low price though. Many important mechanical things like transmissions etc can also be had from Toyota pickups.
Deezums and I both own s10s, and we are both v8 swapping them this would be my 2nd v8 s10, first was a blazer.

I'd fix all the suspension geometry by sticking a baby Cherokee axle under it, for cheep. 99.9% of blazer problems solved
I actually had a vortec 350 ready to swap over, use the stock 4.3 harness with added injector wires, stock computer... Sold it all, the blazer, the engine/trans, the Cherokee axle...
Another 5.3 swap - S-10 Forum
It will never ever be finished

For Sale : 1999 JEEP CHEROKEE XJ
I am selling my Jeep Cherokee XJ because I just bought a new truck. This is a hard to find 2 door, 5 Speed manual transmission, 4 wheel drive. Has a solid front axle. Jeep runs and drives great. I am averaging around 23 miles per gallon on the Interstate. This jeep has no leaks, no check engine lights. Only 150xxx original miles. I have a clean Title. Asking 4200 / Cash talks. Call or text any time.

That said, there's at least 6-9 in Canada that i could get home likely within budget, without the 2LT. There's even a lifted one with a turbo 1HZ. In budget. That weak Canadian dollar, though.
