I can't believe I'm doing this, but I want to kinda defend the licki brush.

I know that when dealing with animals it's good practice to use body language and acts that correspond to what the animals themselves do in their own family/pack whatever. I can see how it's possible that the licking/grooming may more accurately convey a emotion or message, but how much better than simply petting I don't know. I still think it's silly but there MAY be something more too it scientifically.

then again, it may just be something more for crazy cat people.

Having read more on the Kickstarter I think I was giving it too much credit.

Now I have a 4 hour in-person interview scheduled for next Wednesday. Haven't figured out yet how I'm going to explain the absence to my boss.

Need me to write you a Dr's note? I dressed up as a Dr's for halloween one year, so that gives me the right to write Dr's notes as far as I can tell.

This is why I love my employer. I can call off or take time off with NO explanation and show no documentation. I realize it's not the norm everywhere and I can understand not being able to let employees walk away at will, but requiring them to show cause is potentially a reason that people might not to work there.

IMO, if you are not causing a work stoppage, you are willing to either take paid time off, or if you are able to make up your hours/work later in the week I think you should be allowed to go.

I literally can call my boss and tell him "I need to take the afternoon off for personal reasons, I can make up my time Thursday or take PTO" and I have never once been denied. My PTO is MY time to use how I see fit. When I worked in a position where there were minimum staffing levels it was as simple as switching a shift and I had the same flexibility. Oh, and I have 29 paid days off a year. I love healthcare.

One of the reasons I'm looking around is the same reason it's difficult to get time away for an interview -- the department has shrunk to the point where I have no time to pursue any projects and instead spend about 80% of my time just doing support.

I dunno. I think I'll just have to request it as a "personal appointment" and hold my ground if he inquires why I need 4 hours off in the middle of the day. Still not sure how I'd answer if he asks me directly whether I'm interviewing.

Not sure what you're asking. We do use PTO hours but that's not really the issue.

It sounds like it is. If you work a typical 8-5 type schedule, my go to has always been:

"I've got a checkup with the doctor and a few other errands to run that I can't get done before/after work."

It's never been an issue.

If you use PTO then what is the issue? Not being able to get away? Why not have your PTO approved & take off the remaining time of the day

That's what I'm saying -- the department is so thin that any time off requests that aren't made weeks and weeks in advance tend to get a little more attention from the boss. I have 260+ PTO hours stored up, that's not a problem -- it's trying to avoid a situation where I have to look my boss in the eye and lie to him about why I need the time off.
