How (and why) to Ramble on your goat sideways
On a smaller scale, the bookstore I worked at still uses a Wyse 50/50+ terminal system for all POS operations other than running credit cards. When we needed to do offsite sales, we had a serial-to-Ethernet converter box that allowed access to a Wyse terminal emulator that could Telnet (yes, Telnet, not SSH) in over a forwarded port.

Erdoğan got a hold of an iPhone, doing facetime on CNNTurk as we speak.
He's calling his people to the public squares.
I'm afraid there will be a major bloodbath.
F16s doing low passes.
I am home, safe now.

Been watching the news coverage of this event unfolding. There seems to be some confusion about what military is carrying out the coup. There is even a possibility this was carried out by Edrogan himself as a test. A test of loyalty or just a dry run of a coup attempt.

major clusterfuck.
there was a coup. then we were told it was quashed. some soldiers were overpowered and taken by civilians and cops.
then erdoğan did facetime on tv (secret location) and urged his people to hit the streets.
after that it was the mosques... ALL of them turned on their pa systems and called people out to the streets.
there was a lot of gunfire. big bore guns. rapid fire. cars honking, people chanting for erdoğan (he has a lot of supporters) low flying jet fighters, explosions, sonic booms, images of people shot to pieces online.
MIT (turkish intelligence agency) said coup was officially quashed.
major rumors of a badly staged drama by erdogan to solidify his approval ratings and secure presidency (and an islamic constitution)
the "coup" looked very amateurish at that point.
will continue

internet connection is slow/shaky, I have to type fast, sorry for typos..
we had hours of ezan (call to prayer) and sela (call to assembly) from the minaret loudspeakers.
people responded in huge numbers, and THAT made it look like it was all over.
then came the jets and aerial bombing. grand national assembly received diirect hits, twice, on live tv.
military hq was bombed and strafed by helicopters.
gov't jets downed a couple of choppers, very little info on that.
all that happened in Ankara, at the capital.
meanwhile, pretty much all gov't officials were on tv via phone feeds, and that made everyone think twice.
I mean, if they quashed it, thay could get on tv in person. if not, why were they allowed to call in, right?
very confusing, very murky.
then came the jets again. increibly low flights and countless sonic booms. just devastating.
problem is, no one knows who are flying them.
erdoğan came to istanbul - which tells me he does not dare to land in ankara. (that's where the gov't is, after all)
he made a hasty speech at the airport lounge.
but, just then, soldiers started taking over tv stations. cnnturk was taken over. it lasted maybe 5 minutes. thousands of civilians raided the building and "liberated" it.
******* unbelievable. those same people had raided that very building not too long ago, because cnnturk is known to be anti erdoğan.
anyway...
then came the aerial assault. major, earth shaking explosions. I felt the blast wave sitting in my couch.
it took maybe 20 minutes, all is eerily quiet now.
too quiet.
no one knows what kind of deals are going on as we speak.
Before I forget...
Turkish armed forces posted a declaration on their website at around midnight.
They also took over TRT (turkish radio and television) and had their statement announced.
TRT was taken back shortly after, and the declaration was removed form the armed forces website.
incredibly, they posted another one, and that was taken down, too.
gov't officials said the TRT thing was just a pirate declaration. normal broadcast resumed.
but, at 03:10 am, yet another - and shorter coup announcement was posted on the armed forces website. this was the third time, and it is still there.
the time is now 05:41.
Also, Obama sent a message, and said an elected governemtn should be supported. that was big. real big.
but it is quiet for now. erdoğan supporters are claiming victory on a few remaining tv channels.
digiturk, the biggest sat tv platform is down. word is they bombed the **** out of the place, but it is not verified.
too many rumors, too many fabricated news stories.
it will be an interesting saturday over here.
it was definitely one of the most interesting nights of my life.
(there was this curse - may you ive in interesting times...)
will keep you guys posted - there is a lot of backstory to what happened tonite.

Serious ****, man. Keep your head down.
I can't help but wonder if this is what it was like for my parents when Castro & Guevara overthrew the Cuban government. Only without the internet access, obviously.

Gents, I really need your help in an unrelated matter.
I am supposed to be a supporting member. I have been for quite a while now.
Unfortunately, paypal is no longer active in Turkey. They pulled up stakes and left.
And that means I can no longer pay the 3.50 monthly dues.
I wrote to the webmaster and got no response.
Is there a way I could just give my CC # to keep on paying please?
I would very much like to keep paying and remain as a supporting member here.

As an aside, I love how MT is the most pressing concern that you have right now. Not the fact that your country's government may or may not have just been overthrown by the military, artillery fire is raining down on the streets, nobody knows where the President is, and your own Air Force seems to be at war with the population, but rather that you want to be able to browse MT without ads.
You are one weird dude, Commie.

woke up to images of surrendering soldiers.
apparently 8 military personnel defected to Greece in a helicopter and asked for asylum.
Greece said they would cooperate fully.
lot of footage of privates (as in, grunts, poor little young 18 year old hopeless soldiers) being beaten, tortured, killed, decapitated in the streets by civilians.
they had absolutely no say in anything. they were told to stand somewhere, that's it.
people overpowered them.
real coup is being staged today.
real coup.
thousands of judges and prosecutors are being dry "drydocked" as we speak.
tv is announcing 8 members of the supreme justice council are taken down.
10 state council members are detained.
erdoğan is truly cementing his position.
justice is no more.
even opposition media is singing praises to erdoğan today.
there is fear everywhere.
erdoğan and all bigwigs are constantly calling people to get out into the streets.
they want all squares full tonight.
that in itself tells me all may not be over.
erdoğan trolls are taking screenshots of media/forum etc posts by gov't opponents and sending them to the cops.
pm declared last night a festival of democracy.
people are tense.

I want you to know that reading this is literally giving me chills. I've been monitoring the wire services here in NY (I work at a TV station), and I can't figure out what the hell is going on over there. But this is the first I've heard about public executions of soldiers and the dissolution of courts.
Seriously, man. Just stay the **** down.
