C'mon - it's Newburgh. People need reminders when they fear for their lives.

Is it for turning on red? We can turn on red here, not sure about New York.
But our signs:

Right turns on red are prohibited in New York City, except in a few specific locations where this sign exists:

New York State, by comparison, follows the rest of the country and generally permits right turns on red unless otherwise indicated. And when so prohibited, this is indicated either with a "No Turn On Red" sign similar to the one you posted, or a red arrow indication on the stoplight.

Which is why that sign seems so damned odd to me.

Ok, seriously- how the hell did you know that I took that photo in Newburgh?

But our signs:
We had those where I grew up, and I think it is when the opposing lanes have a green arrow. That way you don't move into the intersection at the first sign of movement in your peripheral vision. still a silly sign.

(pictures of the nice parts of Detroit)
Can NY / the rest of the country turn right on red? Specifically where there aren't boulevard turns.

In the places we don't have these ^ we just have the flashing red light "left turn lane"; Make your turn when traffic is cleared.

We have flashing yellow arrows here, with no signs explaining WTF to do.

I've started seeing them in the developing suburbs near KC, they get signs.

Yield on green is too hard for people to comprehend?

I'm assuming because if it's green people will be charging out into oncoming traffic thinking that green means all clear. When they have to yield to oncoming traffic.

It's better than having to sit and wait for your turn once every 3 "turns". That's lame.

Yeah, they still don't trust people to not pull out in front of people with the flashing yellow at all the corners that really need it though, or they should at lest let them flash yellow after 8PM or so.

The fact that these signs exist clearly means that the drivers license test needs to be made harder...much harder.

In the vast majority of the US, it's permissible to make a right turn against a red light under all conditions, and a left turn against a red light if turning from a one-way street onto another one-way street.

Your Michigan-left is about as perverse and strange as the Jersey-left (aka jughandle) which, fortunately, is being phased out in new construction.

ROFL. Props for that reply.

My wife's old boss used to live not too far from there - we went down Plank on the way from 84. I had to make an emergency parts run to Schmidt's in downtown Newburgh when our UV system **** the bed last spring, drove through that area just to look around again before heading home.

Did NYC change the law to make right-on-red legal? It used to be illegal - there was even a local nickname for getting clipped by out-of-staters, something like a "Jersey Kneecapping."

It is still illegal except in a few specific intersections where there is a sign specifically noting that it is permitted after coming to a full stop.

Actual, un-retouched photo of New Jersey:

Since I'm on my phone and don't want to zoom all around reading the discussion on 'right on red' - I think of a lot of such intersections have either pedestrian right-of-way in mind or bad blind spots for traffic on one-way streets in mind.....at least that's been my physical observations at such intersections.

Hawks win! But not on that play, that's a no-goal.
