I test drove one years ago and didn't like it.
Not particularly spacious.
Great handling and brakes, comparable to a miata.
Horrible acceleration, comparable to a miata.
Gas mileage of a large displacement V8.
I remember how the acceleration felt very underwhelming and the car's power curve just felt kind of flat and unexciting- for it to have such pathetic acceleration in the lower RPMs, I expected it to really explode up top. It doesn't. It just keeps on accelerating weakly all the way up to 9k rpm. If the torque was twice as large from 5k-9k rpm, it would be an incredible car. If it got like 40mpg and was dead reliable with the stock performance levels, it would be a great car. Instead it's just the F35 of sports cars. Mazda should have offered the RX8 with the 2.5L four banger from the mazda 3. It would have been respectably fast and gotten 30+ mpg. And reliability and moddability would have been better.
I think an RX8 could make a great chassis donor for some sort of badassed swap, but it would be a lot of work to get everything sorted out. It always is.
