Default Xbox help from old schoolers

So I just got my hands on an Xbox1...yes an old school Xbox. I can't figure out which mod is better-1) soft mod or 2)mod chip. What are the disadvantages of softwood? I like this mod bc it free. Thanks

Softmod is the only way to go. Multiple ways of going about it, and all are free. Has all the capabilities of the hard mod except for ones you won't need because xbox live does not support X-box 1 anymore.

Softmod + XBMC = awesome

You can't upgrade the hd with a soft mod. Spend the 40 or so bucks or however much x3's go for now. Buy a 320 gig PATA hard drive through price watch for like 35 shipped and enjoy the wonders of xbmc. It does have enough power for smaller 720p videos but don't expect 29.97 frames at 1080i (It doesn't support 1080p).

Does the XBMC give you anything more than what I can already do with my ps3?

This is not true. You CAN upgrade your harddrive with a softmod. It's been so long since I've done this, but I specifically remember having to unlock the factory hard drive, copying some key, then writing that key to an upgraded hard drive and locking it back. I have 2 X-box's with upgraded HD's with softmod only.

The best video you'll get out of XBMC is 720p as stated earlier, but you'll only get smooth playback out of 720p Xvid files, MKV's are too much for it.

And, if you have PS3 and stream with PS3 media server, then no, not missing much other than a nice library mode and a plethora of system emulators.

I've only done chip mods to the XBox1 but for $13 why not? I just built two more systems the other day for some head to head gaming but haven't messed with them yet. I keep a system downstairs hooked up to my network and the living room tv for watching movies. XBMC will let you watch just about everything EXCEPT dvd files and MP4s. Since I don't really care about super video quality I usually stick to AVI movies less than 1.5GB.

Oh, I use the white Duo X2 chips. I bought the last two from Divino for $26 shipped to my house. Buy a DVD pack so you can get an IR xbox remote control for movies.

I'll just add this, if you're only using this for movie playback, it would be more ideal just to pick up a WD TV Live Plus since it has HDMI and can do 1080p playback. For emulators, its hard to beat.
