Round 5 Summary:

Round 5 at Spring Mountain marked the first hot day of the 2010 season and a debut for Miata Challenge at that track. This made it tough on the drivers as the long and technical 3.1 mile course is challenging enough without the heat. Still 12 drivers trekked to this beautiful and exclusive track.

In Unlimited class, the big guns were shooting it out in the desert. Andrew Kidd finally edged out Gordon Jennings for his first win of the season with a time of 2:31.164, a close one against Gordon’s 2:31.271.

In Modified class, there was another close battle for the class’ top spot. Bryan Wood barely was able to beat Edward Krisher by a blink of an eye, with 2:43.078 and 2:43.122 lap times, respectively.

In Street class, Derek Dicker defends his 2-round winning streak against newcomer Tam To. Derek showing his prowess, he defeats Tam by nearly 4 seconds, with a 2:54.081 and 2:57.989 respectively.

Round 6 Summary:

A fitting battleground for Miata Challenge, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca finally host to the first official round held at this circuit. The event was apparently very popular for many non-Miata drivers, so the event was sold out a few days after the conclusion to Round 5, so only 9 Miata drivers got into the day of competition.

As usual, Unlimited class featured the classic duel of the titans between Andrew Kidd and Gordon Jennings. With his win in Spring Mountain, Andrew further established that he is a force to be reckoned with. Andrew’s 1:36.458 lap is now possibly the fastest Miata lap ever at Laguna Seca. That’s a 2-second gap to Gordon’s 1:38.654.

Modified class saw the absence of class leader Brian Wood, which meant the other season podium hopefuls Edward Krisher and Grant Heathman to grab critical season points to catch Brian. Edward came out on top with a well-deserved win over Grant, making this victory Edward’s first in the season with a convincing 1.6 second gap against Grant. Lap times were 1:49.583 for Edward and 1:51.190 for Grant.

In Street class, Matt Jones, Ian Jennings and Sonny Watanasirisuk all made their debuts in street class for the 2010 season to battle for their first win in the class. Matt and Sonny are refugees from Modified and Unlimited classes, respectively, after finding no success against their respective class powerhouses for the first half the 2010 season. Between the three, Sonny came out on top with a 1:53.698. Ian followed with a 1:54.866 and Matt trailed behind with a 1:55.490.
