Now that I got your attention, I will introduce myself, My names Trent and I have been addicted to Miata's for 2 years...ahah on to the serious. I am introducing myself so you guys don't think I'm some sort of newfag. I have always loved Miata's for a while now and finally have enough money saved up to purchase one within the next month. (1990 White hopefully 1.6l) I currently own a 2004 vw R32, Which will be my dd while i build my turbo miata which will be for later posting. Anyways just introducing myself so i can become less !
p.s I know how to use google and search so you won't be getting any How do i threads from me...

Oh man. I about **** bricks when I saw this thread title. Thank god you were kidding. Welcome to the forum, I think you'll fit in fine with the rest of us smart-asses! Nice R32, those are pretty much the only VW I've ever actually wanted, save for the HPA 'Rocco.
Any reason why you want a 1.6L Miata? Or for that matter a 1990? Those have the short nose crank (look into it if you don't know why that matters).

Just makes me a little bit nervous that my crank pulley key could shear for basically no reason

Granted it's unlikely, but I'm just saying I wouldn't confine my search to a 1990

Great title. Welcome to the forum. Take it from someone who has had 3 1.6L motors with crank problems get a car with a 1.8l or be prepared to swap one in to save yourself the headache. You could also put a 2jz in it for fun!!

Going on 7 years with a SNC 1.6 and no issues what-so-ever. Then again, the very first thing I did to the car was a timing belt and water pump replacement, so I did the recommended Loctite fix as well. Boosted for most of those years too. Lots of talk about failing short nose crank motors, but not a lot of actual failures.

miata crank wobble
If you are wondering why I was searching for that stuff look at my avatar.

Its true there's problem motors out there, but out of 100 early 1.6 motors how many get crank wobble? If I had it to do over again I probably would have went for a 1.8 motor, but I wouldn't say the 1.6 is a sure timebomb. Having 3 of them fail is just user error or super bad luck. Both which aren't the norm.

I'm not saying that they all are junk I was just noting personal experience. I can also say that it was not user error it was a bunch of weird events more than anything. The first got crank walk at 140K, the second had a balancer fall apart and then destroy the bearings, thethird, broke the key way and destroyed the end of the crank witch I jb welded back until I could get a 1.8L. They stay together most of the time just in my personal experience I would rather have a 1.8 over a 1.6 any day.
