Default About time I posted! Hello all.

Hello All!!!

My name is Chris in the UK, and have had my 5 since march last year and love my little mazda, great site, so far Iv only lurked around for 6 months trying to gain as much information from the massive amount of posts already on here So thought Id best put my car up on here and say hello!

This is as I got it

the same weekend I got it I changed a few little things
steering wheel

newer wheels

and gave it a service

and then drove it around like that all summer up till november where I took it off the road as I dont want to kill it over the winter.

The mazda got lots done over winter like:-

1. New clutch
2. Cambelt (got no proof of it being done on 128000 now!!)
3. Oil/coolant ect ect
4. Rear brakes
5. All filters
6. New exhaust (needed! 2nd hand if anyone has one)
6. THISvvvvvvv

Been trying to understand the process of turboing a mazda (wait till lower down and you'll see my other turbo cars  ) the problems I have are understanding the electronics!

The reason why Im not use to dealing with Electronics on a car (although Im an electrical engineer lol) is that Im an imper at heart by that I mean hillman imps :P although if Im honest Iv been getting distracted by the mx Hillman imps where made in Scotland in the 60/70’s.

this was my first major project imp

TURBO!

I spent a two years or so learning about what I was doing and making it better and better all the time to be honest I spent to much money in total but it gave so much back to me, so much fun, learnt alot, and managed to get a mag feature with cover photo.
In my imp owning time Iv had 13 or 14 cant quite remember at the moment this next one is my new project after spending lots of time engine and turbo wise the white ones body was getting worse so I changed it for this shell which only turned out to be a right lemon :( so its changed a bit in the last two years trying to get it finished for this years shows but the 5 keeps getting in my way spending my money along with getting engaged and try to save for a house its hard to finish anything!

that was two years ago now its.....

its getting there now.

Anyway Ill stop posting none mx5 pics now as not sure if its fully accepted here and dont want to annoy anyone here on my first post

Sorry Iv gone on a bit just wanted to say hello properly and show you all who I am and that Im not someone on here just joined to ask how quick a turbo 5 is or how much power lol

So after all the work this winter I ended up with this! (Iv got lots and lots of build pics if anyone’s interested?)

Its been great fun driving her around up to now, but unfortunately its become obvious that I’m running lean and I believe its at full boost (can just hear some detonating I think! Was out on the motorway and ended up having a sporting drive with another 5, in 5th gear and high revs I heard some metallic sounds, not sure if it was detonation or not, so I took out the plugs and sorry about the pic’s but I think I’m running lean!

My set up currently is

Std Greddy kit
Bipes
Boost gauge (not sure if reading correctly)

It holds a nice constant 5.5psi boost in all gears according to the gauge! So a little confused as to why I’m getting knock?

I would like to buy a Wideband kit and Knocklite but unfortunately Im now so strapped for cash its unbelievable! I was hoping that someone might be able to give me a little direction into what to do next? On an UK website I go on Iv arranged to buy some 1.8 injectors as I thought this might stop the running lean at high revs and then go from there really?

Thanks for reading

Chris!

Welcome aboard Chris.

Please post your location below your Avatar.

I suggest you buy a wideband asap.

I may still have my old 1.8L injectors. If you're willing to pay for shipping, I'll send them to you.

If you keep running your car in boost lean, you'll be rebuilding your engine in no time and if you don't have the money, it'll be parked for some time.

You should know better than to run the turbo without a wideband. AEM widebands go for around $230 in the States. Is their price so much higher in the UK? How about checking to see if someone local is selling one?

BTW, if you read the FAQs in this site, you'll find compatible (bigger sized) injectors you could search for.

Welcome!
Personally, I'de hold off on getting 1.8l Injectors, and get at least 305cc Supra Injectors, or higher. (and baby the thing till you get the injectors) The hunger for more power will definately grab hold of you, and you will end up getting bigger injectors anyway

Also, I'de invest in an Innovate LC-1, an AEM UEGO, or some other wideband o2 sensor immediately. This will tell you what's going on.

Seems as though you are pushing the 1.6l injectors to their limit. Give them more room to breath, and get a wideband o2 to make sure you are still out of the "oh ****! Danger" area.

thanks for the replies guys, the injectors you might be right - everyone always wants more power! lol

The Wideband gauges with sensors sell for around the same price here that is without the exchange rate £200ish, which I just haven’t got at the moment I was thinking if I could just at least make sure the injectors where ok I could then maybe rolling road it (they should have a AFR meter shouldn’t they?) and see what its actually doing!

Then Id hopefully have a bit more confidence with the set up, then add intercooler/wideband/knock sensor when i can!

Cheers
Chris

A water methanol injection kit will get rid of detonation. It will also be good for when you do further horsepower mods in the future. It changes 91 octane fuel into 116 octane fuel with a 50/50 water meth mix. Devils Own has a kit for $245. I was able to turn up my boost when I installed my kit. Adding methanol adds extra fuel. Water methanol injection cools down cylinder temperatures.
