If I ever do anything like that, It would probably be android based (I've been thinking about a logging/basic data display program for a while).

The whole folder is 3.5mb. The binary is only about 800kb. With PIL I can use any image format (except for multipage TIFF, which I guess is a challenge with lots of image programs). In the readme file it talks about needing additional libraries for other formats. Imagemagick would probably do the trick.

A decicated app would be awesome, but until that happens you could do it like this if you really wanted to.
Set up an ad-hoc wireless connection between iphone and carputer and take over carputer screen with vnc. It does work, but probable not very practical. Cool to impress your friends though.
I turned the ignition on without starting the car (kids are already to bed) so I can't say how the refresh rate is.

KDE, maybe not, but QT ain't too shabby. Licensing is better now that Nokia purchased it (they wrote their own LGPL version of PyQT).
